  1. Yes the BNJ article is pretty comprehensive on the 1787 issues and I think somewhere in the BNJ I read an equally illuminating article about the 1798 abortive issue. I'd also recommend Kevin Clancy's (now of the Royal Mint) PhD thesis on the recoinage of 1816 which has some interesting information on the situation in the 18th century and the build up to it - http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/466/
  2. I was referring to the original post, which mentioned two lots, one of which was a penny, the other a set of Maundy... I'm aware that from 1927 onwards it is possible to tell the difference, but I've heard that before that it is significantly harder and was just wondering if anyone had any tips...
  3. On the subject of Maundy, is there a way to tell pre 1927 Maundy threepences apart from their ordinary counterparts?
  4. Hi all, Thanks for the responses. Chris, that's great, thanks a lot! I'll email you my address etc in a minute. HC, was planning on going to the next Bloomsbury Fair, so will definitely look out for the bargain trays! Richtips, what charity did you buy them from? To be honest I don't have £75 to spend, but would be very keen to buy some cheaper bulk lots. Tom - Thanks for the suggestion. I already have a (admittedly quite out of date) Spink Standard Catalogue so have been consulting that whenever possible
  5. Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to collecting/ buying and selling and don't have much spare cash. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good car boot sales in and around London/ Surrey which might have stallholders shifting some coins, or if anyone has found any bargains at them. Any other advice about the best places to acquire reasonably priced pieces would be much appreciated! Thanks, Oli
