Thats a fair and interesting point - i wonder if there is any way of finding out how many "fine works" issues would have been struck. I previously owned the the brooker Fine works mm bell sixpence and i have seen 1 other example which was well worn and inferior in grade. I can only presume that the worn example must have found its way into circulation

I tend to agree with you but there is something about it in hand. I have a group of about 30 shillings in front of me and none are so neatly made. Possibly the coin has been just lovingly handled over the years and is showing signs of wear now. I think to be safe i'll just list it as is and state that a collectors ticket which it comes with, mentions in their opinion it may have been a fine works strike.

Thank you for looking that up - I'm not 100% sure whether this is, but it came with a collectors ticket mentioning it may be one, and given its neat round flan it made me think it might possibly be.

Hi All, I wondered whether anyone could help. Does anyone know whether there was a fine works isue for this type? I have an ex lingford example which has all the charateristics of a fine work. It is perfectly round and although a little weak still very well struck. I checked Brooker but he never had a Fine works specimen for this issue. I dont have a copy at the minute of Michael Sharps article and wondered does he make any referance to fine works issue Thank you for your help in advance for any help

Good Morning All, I must agree as an auction company Heritage have taken all aspects of selling to another level, however i'm not too sure whether this is actually good for the coin market or not. Just image trying to sell here in Engalnd an 1887 Proof £5 for even £20,000, you would be laughed at yet in the states this seems to be the going rate. Another example of the graded crazyed american market is the Gothic Crown that sold yesterday. In all honest a gothic crown IMO is very common yet people seem to be paying almost anything to get one. I sold last year a beautiful 1847 proof gothic crown for about £5,000. It has since been graded by PCGS as PR67. Going on yesterdays realised prices does this mean its a $40,000 + coin now ? That all being said did anyone actually have any luck with buying anything yesterday?

It appears to me to be a forgery, however like others have said it very difficult to say without seeing th epiece in hand. I am also aware of another group of forgeries that where made to apparently satisfy collector’s desires to have a Scarborough besieged piece in their collections. I seem to remember this second group being sold on ebay by an American seller about 3 years ago. i was only defending it as i bought it for myself. A little more than i expected but its the best i have found so far for this mm.

I thought lot 2113 was a very nice piece. Fully round and much better than the normally encountered halfcrowns of this mintmark.

If yesterdays prices at spink are anything too go by, i cant see any bargains today however good luck aswell

No its all in one book again. Hammered gold appears to have increased by about 6-10% across the board, they also give a mention about the increased value of the Tudor and Stuart periods (about 3% increase on the fine values and 10% on VF). This is apparently the result of a significant number of desirable pieces coming ontro the market in the last year. Saxon up by 7% and finally milled up 5 - 10% with prices stagnating or decreasing in the lower grades. Same old Spink, sitting on the fence with the values !

Just home from Spink, maybe everyones reading a little too much into what they said in the ATG. They appeared to have a fair few 'cheap' coins on offer aswell as a few top end pieces in their showroom. By the way i got a copy of the new 2014 standard catalogue today. They received a delivery of a few of them earlier, maybe a 100 or so.
