Always shocks me, that so many varieties of even a relatively common coin such as the 1951 crown exist! Think now I have all varieties (5) now but I wonder.

LCA have a proof, plain edge, 1821 copper crown coming up in there auction, never seen a copper crown before! has anyone else???? Verdict please on its place in a silver crown collection?

Just looked at CGS definition on their use of the term "Mule" for the 1960 "polished dies" New York Trade Fair crown and it describes it as, Obverse from standard dies. Reverse from polished dies. Would that combination equal a "Mule" ??

Yes, sorry, I missed out the word "World" on my description. Mule comes from descriptions I have heard used by others (CGS) and I believe it is the "polished die" as you say. Why are they not listed for sale very often? are they rare? Thanks

Is there anyone out there that knows the mintage figure for the 1960 trade fair "mule" crown? Just wondered because I never seem to see them on sale lists!

Went to LCA yesterday, saw a 1953 crown with the U missing from wording (unlisted) has anyone ever heard of these varieties before. Others must have, it went for over £200 !

probably so they dont reflect when being photographed hmmmm. Whilst its rare its not a very pretty coin.

london coins have a 1951 crown (sandblasted dies) for sale rated R7. Has anyone ever seen one of these before? Would they really form dies for a so called strike of a few? What price do you think it will achieve? Anyone out there got one of these??

Serious question now! Why were dollars produced as legal tender during the early 1800s?

Part of me wishes people would stop discovering these "variations" each one makes me realise i will never complete my crown collection!!!

Missed the hairline, but beautiful coin, I have a 85 and an 88 logged, i wonder?

I love the 1935 crown, I think that may take the top slot or very near!!!!

Also never listen to blanketing, old fashioned remarks, do you your own research, understand why you collect coins and form the best logical way forward!

Hi Nek, I get my reasonaly valuable coins graded by CGS, when they return they are encapsulated in holders (so that they dont get damaged, and the grade stays the same) I also then have the value, type, and listings of them for insurance purposes. Lots of collectors dont agree with encapsulation of coins but in time it will become only way forward. Good luck

Just changing the thread a little, does anyone know how rare the 1888 wide date crown is? They dont seem to come up very often and prices seem very high. I managed to aquire one last year but havnt seen one since. I also notice that the variety dosnt seem to appear in ESC.

How does anyone, with any accuracy evaluate if ESC figures are right or wrong? Not having a moan, just trying to understand?

I had collected coins for most of my life, then concentrated on crowns only as they just fascinated me. When i first came across an encapsulated (CGS) crown i was fascinated by the accuracy and confidence that it gave me in the coin. I then took the decision to submit my collection of 80 ish crowns for grading. I was horrified by some of the rejects due to spots, cleaning etc then even more horrified at some of the grading results! I was also pleased at some of the variants found within my collection, which i would never have noticed. This has now totally altered my collecting, many will say i should have looked closer at the crowns when purchasing, but we all have to learn. I now will purchase a CGS coin without prior viewing! The other side to my character enjoys fighting for my position in the "League Tables" within the CGS website. I have also found all the other information within the CGS website extremely beneficial to my collecting.

I bet all you guys cant wait to bid for the CGS encapsulated coins comming up in the London Coins auction!!

I am safe then, phew! i have no coins, no money, six starving german shepards, a wife thats a boxer, live on an island in a castle with a drawbridge, and dont have visitors!
