I do, I hope to become as conversant with many aspects of this as you lot, I want to have a complete set of decimal coins to date ( all UNC if possible )as well as a decent set of pre decimal coins. Particularly threepenny bits both bronze and silver, sixpences, half crowns and crowns. Oh and any others I can lay my hands on in the meantime or between collections. Wasting time is a sin.

I was an underbidder on the two numbered pennies in the Adams sale in 2003 and they hammered at 600 and 920 respectively. My halfpenny cost me £650 in 2007 and is numbered 138/405. Some have sold for over £1K. The numbers in the fields refer to the quantity of that denomination struck and the total bronze respectively (see Graham Dyer's article in the 1982 BNJ (vol.52) p.234-240. Obviously there is no duplication of number combinations. They appear to be some sort of mint control or record. How they escaped into the collecting fraternity isn't certain, but they seem to have appeared in the 1940-50s. I am not 100% sure how, so will not speculate. Thank you Rob. So are you saying that they struck 138,000 or merely a 138 copper and 405 Bronze. i know others will understand this off the bat, but I am a bit slower I am afraid, and as it is a bit special I thought I would be the daft sod to ask about it for other beginners who wandered across it but didn't want to look daft asking here ( looking daft is a family trait, so I'm not bothered ). I thought it had to do with how many 000's before the die was knackered !. Oh well. That would be 138 tons of halfpennies and 405 tons of bronze in total by 1866. The one on Gouby's site is 139 and 406, so possibly they were sampled every complete ton struck. Blimey oh riley. Now that is a lot of ha'pennys . They are Pyx pieces, internal mint tallies of numbers (actually tons) struck best reference is the detailed study by Michael Gouby here Rob posted a picture of his a while back. but can't remember which thread David I read that page a while back David, but I don't understand it or the actual reason for the numbering I am afraid.

How many of you wish that as kids you could have saved all those lovely coins you spent in the 40's 50's and 60's, looking back at it now would you have kept that shiny new coin if you realised it was going to be worth a lot lot more now, I wish as a kid I had "bumped" a lot more fruit machines too. I ruddy well would of, I often sit here and think of coins I wish I had kept back then. I also wish I had a job as a bank mamager because I would go through all their coins and keep the best ones ( swapping for my duff ones of course ). I wonder how many of our modern coins that some sneer at as junk are going to be future 1933 pennies or such. Ahh Memories.

I want a decent Scottish Shilling from 1959, but I see a auction site saying REVERSE. 1959 Elizabeth II Scottish Shilling (2nd issue) (Reverse), what are they on about, how many different 1959 scottish shillings are there ?. Oh and whilst I am waffling about this, does anyone want to tell me what the meaning or significance is of finding silly scratched numbers on the obverse / reverse of victorian pennies is about too.

Mine is exactly the Same aa that and got it last Year from Aldi for €30 Typical, everyone has one but me, and when I want one it isn't around unless you have an amex platinum card, I used to like you Azda but you can go off some people really fast around here :lol:

Ok returning to this again !. Hypothetical question. If I have a rare penny that is covered in verdigris, I have 2 options for it, one being the bin, the other is I clean it and polish it and it looks nice and shiny afterward, surely that is better than throwing it in the bin, surely saving any coin is better than throwing it away, what if one day it becomes the only example left, is everyone going to moan that it was saved by cleaning it. Answers on the back of a penny black please.

It just gets worse, I am more bored than earlier, and that is worse than bored, now i am super bored, in fact I am super duper bored, on top of that the wife forgot my Rizlas ( I smoke home mades ) and there are no shops open and no transport anyway, so I am attempting to use craft paper and it is vile !. How bored can a man get, well, let me tell you, bored is not really bored untill you get as bored as I am, now that isn't normal bored, it's really bored you know the kind of bored that goes with watching such things as x factor, or BB, now that kind of bored is bored, but even saying that I am more bored than that even.
