Unfortunately, when I were a lad, decimalisation was imminent and EVERYONE was doing exactly that! I was going through 5/- bags of stuff from all the local banks, and anything of a decent age in good condition, got snaffled straight into my collection (1938 halfpenny UNC good lustre, 1935 halfpenny EF lustre, 1909 halfpenny GVF, for example). But I also kept lots of virtually BU coins dated between 1965 and 1967 - still worthless even now. We all knew the low mintage of 1965 Scottish shillings, and in 1967-1970 there were plenty to be picked up in change, virtually BU. They haven't exactly proved to be the 'dead cert' investment we all thought. See, there he goes again, always telling me what he has but never offering to sell them, even if they are worthless as he puts it. Might as well just throw them at me then hadn't you . I HAVE offered to sell you some coins. I've also told you that with my mobility problems, it's not going to be quick. Try breathing in a few times, counting to ten slowly, and be patient. Actually I was messing about and not being serious Peck, sort of like everyone has them and your all teasing me . I understand your mobility problem rather better than you may imagine, and so I also understand how hard it is to get about, I am housebound for various reasons or I would of been at plenty of bric a brac shops and car boots by now. It is also why I am online and post at very weird times, more than most. I have patience, and so it is not a problem, but I also have to be honest and say, I forgot it was you who I spoke to. Sorry about that, it's not like me to do that either.

  4. Ah,ah! that's 7 coins then! Sorry Hun, still only 5, I counted those in to the number before I got them.
  5. I agree. It's not a bad looking issue at all. It's just unfortunate that - like the very attractive 1997 crown - it's so common. I finaly got someone to say that my churchill crown is not bad looking
  6. According to our esteemed Mr Groom, there are two kinds of 1959 Scottish shilling. Look at the 3 little diamonds at the base of the crown. Type 1: all 3 touch the baseline Type 2: only the left hand diamond touches the baseline. In my experience, type 2 is commoner. 18 Type 2s have passed through my hands in the last 5 years, compared to 12 Type 1s. Thanks Declan. I was rather confused as I don't have any reference books for this as yet, I still hope the wife will oblige me soon, after all it is my money she spends . How are we doing with finding me my penny ? . A good inexpensive set to get you going would be : • the latest CCGB (Collectors Coins GB) which lists all values and most minor varieties, from 1797 (copper) and 1816 (silver) • from the same publishers (this site) : Check Your Change, for decimal issues • both of Dave Groom's guides to 20th Century varieties : one for bronze, one for silver etc. All those guides can be ordered via this site. You can then save up for Davies (silver varieties from 1816) and Gouby (bronze pennies from 1860), if you fancy them. There is also the annual Spink Standard Catalogue which lists all reigns and types from Roman times up to the latest waste-of-time-and-space issues from our esteemed Royal Mint - a good general reference book. I have CCGB 2011 but it doesn't seem to be in that, nor my spink or Krauss versions, so I guess I better get the ones you mention that are on my amazon wish list. Why is it that the ones I want are so expensive to me.
  7. Tim's book is a brilliant resource, and I have always found him very approachable about anomolies and queries...a must have investment for those interested Can you link to it please. all I can see on google is a book about warfare on greeks.
  8. I am sorry if this is against the grain or sensibilities of some here, I am also sorry if it offends or is deemed as not appropriate, however I think it merits some exposure and some help from those who can. Please read and if possible help. http://www.soldiersoffthestreet.com/index.html https://www.facebook.com/pages/Soldiers-Off-The-Street-SOTS/146394338732643?sk=wall
  9. I received my two Crowns today from Mr David Watson. As promised they are undamaged and in wallets, so as they say, the jobs a good un. Oh and Churchill is NOT ugly, it's quite a decent coin thank you you miserable old beggars.

  11. Correct No-one. There has not been a King (or Queen) of England since 1707.
  12. Who was on the English throne in 1831? No googling.
  13. I can say that the following happened today. My brown / pink 1950 shilling I cleaned with a dremel and a soft pad using aluminum cleaner, it came up silver ... interesting. My dark green and ugly 1946 Halfpenny ditto above but I used jewelers rouge on it and it looks rather shiny and nice if not "authentic" for others. My other 1953 Halfpenny also dark green got dumped in some caustic soda and came out rather the worse for wear, although I think the pits in it are from the Verdigris being eaten. My Farthings are sitting here looking rather ugly and one is indecipherable apart from its date. So I may try those next. All the above apart from the first one were scrappers according to many. So no harm done. It's my 1907 halfpenny and all them Pennies I am looking at that worry me... Still.
  14. I do, I hope to become as conversant with many aspects of this as you lot, I want to have a complete set of decimal coins to date ( all UNC if possible )as well as a decent set of pre decimal coins. Particularly threepenny bits both bronze and silver, sixpences, half crowns and crowns. Oh and any others I can lay my hands on in the meantime or between collections. Wasting time is a sin.
  15. I must have 30 of the blighters left from NEF to UNC after buying a job lot years ago. These sell for 99p on Ebay so I can't be bothered to list. graffiti on coins is the same as on everything else... Want to sell me one Peter ? paypal ?, if so throw me a price all in will you. Take a deep breath and save up. I was an underbidder on the two numbered pennies in the Adams sale in 2003 and they hammered at 600 and 920 respectively. My halfpenny cost me £650 in 2007 and is numbered 138/405. Some have sold for over £1K. The numbers in the fields refer to the quantity of that denomination struck and the total bronze respectively (see Graham Dyer's article in the 1982 BNJ (vol.52) p.234-240. Obviously there is no duplication of number combinations. They appear to be some sort of mint control or record. How they escaped into the collecting fraternity isn't certain, but they seem to have appeared in the 1940-50s. I am not 100% sure how, so will not speculate. Thank you Rob. I can't access that yet though, or find it online. So are you saying that they struck 138,000 or merely a 138 copper and 405 Bronze. i know others will understand this off the bat, but I am a bit slower I am afraid, and as it is a bit special I thought I would be the daft sod to ask about it for other beginners who wandered across it but didn't want to look daft asking here ( looking daft is a family trait, so I'm not bothered ). I thought it had to do with how many 000's before the die was knackered !. Oh well. That would be 138 tons of halfpennies and 405 tons of bronze in total by 1866. The one on Gouby's site is 139 and 406, so possibly they were sampled every complete ton struck. Blimey oh riley. Now that is a lot of ha'pennys . Thanks for the explanataion Rob, it was appreciated.

  17. They are Pyx pieces, internal mint tallies of numbers (actually tons) struck best reference is the detailed study by Michael Gouby here Rob posted a picture of his a while back. but can't remember which thread David I read that page a while back David, but I don't understand it or the actual reason for the numbering I am afraid.

How many of you wish that as kids you could have saved all those lovely coins you spent in the 40's 50's and 60's, looking back at it now would you have kept that shiny new coin if you realised it was going to be worth a lot lot more now, I wish as a kid I had "bumped" a lot more fruit machines too. I ruddy well would of, I often sit here and think of coins I wish I had kept back then. I also wish I had a job as a bank mamager because I would go through all their coins and keep the best ones ( swapping for my duff ones of course ). I wonder how many of our modern coins that some sneer at as junk are going to be future 1933 pennies or such. Ahh Memories.
  20. I want a decent Scottish Shilling from 1959, but I see a auction site saying REVERSE. 1959 Elizabeth II Scottish Shilling (2nd issue) (Reverse), what are they on about, how many different 1959 scottish shillings are there ?. Oh and whilst I am waffling about this, does anyone want to tell me what the meaning or significance is of finding silly scratched numbers on the obverse / reverse of victorian pennies is about too.
  21. Don't these new fangled high tech places do video conference bidding ?
  22. I am very Discerning Debbie. I got a 2006 VC 50p today from the wife in her change as well. I now have to get the other one to match it

I have quite a few coins in the category you're talking about! E.g. modern, quite high grade, low value, that sort of thing. Sure, go ahead, rub it in why dont you... what do YOU call modern anyway. Nice this forum, everyone else has the coins except me.. I MEANT - spare coins! Coins that would suit you down to the ground!! Going cheep How cheap ?, I am a budgie. LOL. "Pretty polly, pretty polly". If you're serious I could look through my tins and bags of stuff and sort out some stuff, or you could just tell me what kind of things you're after (oh, anything? oh, all right then ) and I'll see if I've got 'em. It will take a wee while though, I'm not very mobile these days. How did you guess !, yep anythng will do fine. Thank You.
