i really don't tend to buy from one dealer, it depends on what coins are for sale and who is selling them at the time, if i had to pick one dealer out as a favourite it would be chris rudd, due to my love of celtic coins, and another dealer i tend to buy a few from is cgb in paris. but i don't have one that i use more than others.

the only real plan i made was to collect as many civil war coins as possible including siege pieces. it has taken 48 years and a lot of money but i have acheived my goal and have an example of every commonwealth and cromwell coin as well as siege pieces from scarborough, newark, pontefract and carlisle. the charles I pieces were far easier to find but i have managed to get an example of nearly all of them, i am still collecting them to complete the royalist issues and when i have all of them then i will most probably stop collecting all together.

Yes, I remember the Scarisbrick in the early 1960's - is it still the same? Yes it's still there. Not sure whether it has changed much since being a local I don't go there much but I'll be walking past it today. I love Southport for its seaside feel. Much nicer shopping there than in Liverpool, but obviously Liverpool has more shops, and the new Liverpool One is great. Just need a coin dealer in Southport for me to browse in. is david regans shop still open? i used to get some really good coins from him a couple of years ago......

Ok I am framing this response for the next time the wife looks over my shoulder at my next acquisition Some people wouldn't pay more than 99p on ebay for a coin or live their lives searching the 50p bins whereas some pay a six figure sum or even more. Why assume this forum is any different? We are a broad cross section of collecting society and it's each to their own. As long as your priorities are to provide the basics for your family and dependants and that is covered, the surplus is disposable income/savings to be spent in any way you or your partner chooses or not. In the case of the above sum, £4500 will buy a nice coin, but there is an ever increasing list of things that it won't. As long as it is within your means, £45.00 or £4500 is irrelevant. the last 2 coins i bought were 1987 uncirculated 1p and 2p coins from chris for 30p each, the coin that has given me the most pleasure of of all buying was the 1941 netherlands zinc 2 1/2 cent, i had searched for 20 years to find a really nice example and eventually i found it in a box at a flea market for 10p. whether you spend thousands or pence makes no difference it's the coin you want to buy that counts.

white neutral acid gloves are the norm for me, for coins and notes, BTW the best albums i have found for my notes are the wh smith first day cover albums, thet are mylar with acid neutral paper inserts, as the long term storage for FDC's are the same as notes. for my coins its the good old lindner trays,

i've got the 1819 george III sixpence and shilling forgeries which were brass washed with silver. also 1 1913 half sovereign forgery which is bronze washed with gold.

i have a detailed catalogue of all my collection, including possible market price, it took me over 12 months to compile it but it cost nothing apart from time. i have it saved on a memory stick clearly labelled coins and banknotes. the list includes a detailed description of each item along with a photograph.

looking at the ngc web site it is laughable to see the main photo in the "grading room" where the "grader is holding a coin in his hands with no sign of gloves etc, with all the best will in the world acids from human skin will pass on to the coin regardless of how clean the hands are.

The one i bought was called Traveller, it's nothing special, but it does the job for looking at anything you can't see in hand like the C over inverted C 2d i recently posted on the forum. i have over 11,000 coins so to slab them all would cost me a fortune, and take the fun out of collecting. i have been collecting for 48 years and over that time i have become proficient in grading my coins, why should i pay someone to do it for me who probably hasn't got the same experience as i have.

all my coins are stored in lindner trays with acid neutral paper rounds with the info on them, when i handle my coins i always wear my white cotton gloves, regardless if it is a sovereign or a decimal penny............

our americans cousins appear to rave over heavily toned coins and if they are slabbed to boot they are almost orgasmic. personally i do not find a heavily toned coin attractive at all, and i'll wager that the vast majority are artificially created monstrosities.

our friends across the pond relentlessly slab almost every coin they come into contact with, personally i think that slabs are abhorrent.......................what's your opinion??

i would grade it as vg/fine because of the amount of the obverse damage, the 1 does appear to be a double strike though.

i have often wondered what i would do if i found a hoard, it's the time when the little angel and the little demon in your mind come into conflict.......should i/shouldn't i.

is it just me or is the amount of junk being issued as non circulating legal tender coins getting ridiculous, we have coins commemorating barbie, transformers, peanuts, we have coins shaped like motor cycles, guitars, countries. what exactly these offer to our hobby mystifies me................
