Crowns are fine in albums - just make sure you check them a couple of times a year to make sure the plastic hasn't started to 'sweat' (keep them in a dry salt-free environment is the secret) Albums are less good for copper - that and bronze needs very careful storage.

Nothing will ever match the time I went to a coin fair where there was HUGE crate full of coins marked at "5 for £1" - the guy in charge said "that lot hasn't been sorted - you might find the odd thing in there". Well, not only was there some pre-1920 silver in there, I also found an 1888 sixpence GEF, and a 1951 brass 3d ABU !! THAT'll never happen again ...

As a former dealer myself, I can tell you that browsing through unending sacks of auction lots full of rubbish "on the off chance", does tend to alter your perspective somewhat. It reaches the point that you tell yourself that only something extremely rare would make all that waste of time worthwhile.

That's not Photoshop - if it was, you'd have something looking much better than that. It's been artificially lustred in the past and that's now wearing, as davidrj says.

It's unlikely that there are any rarities among those, and I can't see many collectors wanting to sift it. I have heard that the Royal Mint at Llantrisant are still paying face value to redeem pre-decimal coins, but I should think the cost of getting it all to Wales would be pretty steep. The highest value coin you have there is the 3d, which is about 1p face value, so I imagine the total face value is not very much. In fact, the metal value would be higher than that, but you say local scrap yards don't want it? More fool them - don't they know how much copper is fetching now? Getting scrap copper value is definitely your best hope.

Yeah. I used to have a raised edge proof which I got from Warwick&Warwick. But tbh, I auctioned it on as there wasn't enough to distinguish it from the currency piece (apart from the raised edge). This one doesn't even have the raised edge to mark it out. And with the R.E.P. fetching less than £300, it's hard to justify the stratospheric price for this one. As for provenance, who's bothered to acquire a coin once owned by a playboy Nazi?

My only thought is - if they already had an R (the correct letter), why would they overpunch it with an incorrect B?

Although strictly speaking they are not currency coins as they were displaced by the smaller versions, there are varieties of the large 10p pieces that make the 1992 varieties positively laughable. I'm talking REALLY rare. They were all documented by Ron Stafford in the 70s and 80s, and would make going through your large ten pences a worthwhile exercise. Or it would do, except that as with the 1992s, not many people are interested and there isn't any real market for 'em.

The Victorians were great ones for decorating coins - there are any number of enamelled coins out there. This looks more unusual - like someone has stuck a thin (probably metal) disc over the obverse, within the rim. The central hole was probably to suspend the coin using a string or wire or something similar. Interesting talking point.
