And your gothic florin for the other competition. i'm suprised it didn't win! If i was a member, gothic florin would get my vote! Quite a few of us are shocked about that! That copper coin wasn't even in the same league. But some on the site vote US coins because that's all they know, others just have a tendency to vote copper regardless of what it actually looks like.

Phew... there's me thinking someone had gone and ruined a perfectly collectable coin during the Victorian period, there's nothing like Victorians for ruining things!

If it's very worn so that the writing/legends are hard to read, and the main details are also showing wear then i think you'd be looking at about £2.00 max, maybe a tad more, but nothing over a fiver. If the writing legends are practically all gone then a £1.00 is about right. Now if you were to clean it you'd be lucky to get 50 pence. Thus definately don't clean it, and you might as well hold onto it, call it a good look charm or a conversational piece, or even a coin you keep for flipping. You never knew something almost 200 years old could be bought so cheap!

Now admittedly i quite like the look of most enamelled coins so perhaps i'm biased here. Also enamelling usually effects the Jubilee head coinage or George III Late milled coins more than anything else. Usually there's many of those available and thus it doesn't really both me that that's another coin ruined. (Yes enamelling ruins coin, but in such a nice way). But this... He likes his farthings, he's got loads of them on his site! I really must get a high grade tin farthing one day when my funds stretch that far. Never liked copper, try to avoid the suff like the plague, but tin! I bet that's a fascinating area!!! Must get a tin coin one day. And to be honest i probably wouldn't have noticed the 1952 halfcrown either, i'm kinda tuned into pre George III stuff at the moment, and i don't really notice the later stuff much these days.

The fact that the original poster stated is shows an eagle would suggest it's an American coin of some description. But why 1/8th of a d? And why d. So i'm totally puzzelled. Syl.

Not really my area this; so without checking the catalogue... Sounds like a groat to me, wouldn't happen to have Britannia (a la 50p) on the reverse would it? Groats were circulating 4d coins back in the 19th century, from about 1836-1850s then the silver threepence took over. If the reverse is a 4 with a wreath round then it's a maundy 4d. I think Mr Nichols (aforementionned cabinate maker) actually will make the coin drawers in the cabinate to custom designs. So lets say you had an 1887 set that you wanted to keep together then he'd be able to make one of the drawers in the cabinate accomodate such a set. I nearly had that done myself, but i decided on just the usual by denomination instead. Glad i did that now, got almost enough sixpence (for LM Sixpences) and shilling trays (for the EM sixpences) available, had to kick the halfpennies out...and the sovereigns, and the half sovereigns! Not really using the crown tray much... got a few Morgan Dollars and what not in those...but that's about it.

OK.... so both your collections live in luxury 5 star hotels while mine are packed into a run down high rise block of flats Although the cabinets are lovely, I don't think my coins quite justify that level of accomodation, plus I expect I would need several! If you got to the stage where your cabinet was full, would you buy another cabinet or sell some coins? I've got to that stage, basically i've sold off many, but some of the cheaper ones get downgraded and go back to the albums...

Coincraft states that the silver threepences are also legal tender still, but since 1971 for three new pence. I asked the Royal Mint and they denied the fact, and stated they were not legal tender. Not sure about Double Florins. Half sovereigns are legal for 50p though...

Never had the fortune to have done Latin, couldn't find anywhere near me that did it. French was easily available everywhere, yeah sure... but how often has french actually helped me in history? (actually a little bit), but the German was totally pointless...

Your welcome... Not sure about whether it would sell for more as a complete set or not though, it might! But you know what they say about selling in bulk quantities!!

Well there's a number of ways we could do this... Now i presume since your father has such an extensive collection that he knows how to grade and whatnot... If so you could either purchase a cheap coin book and look up the prices once you've catalogued the dates and grades of each and every coin. Or you could PM me with a list, lets say 50 coins at a time (so my inbox doesn't overflow!) Starting with the pennies, state the grade and dates and i'll be happy to look them up for you. It'll not take me long to get through 290 coins. Then i could give you an approx value per coin and let you add them all up! Obviously the 1960s stuff won't be worth a great deal even in UNC, as they are pretty common. But the earlier stuff might be. Unless it's all below AVF condition, then it might not be worth all that much. But we'll see. Regards. Syl.

... and you could mention that in those days you could build a collection from change in your pocket spanning 100 years and five monarchs, but now all you can get are 30 year old coppers. Or, you could look forward to the Euro and say how we would be able to pick out coins from other countries in our change. After all, we haven't changed our currency for 30 years... Mark I have removed a whole bagful of 1971 stuff from circulation as part of my experiment into how common the Machin head copper stuff is. 1971 is at the top, 1982 is the least encountered. (unless you count 1972 proofs with 0 examples raked out of change) Syl.
