I must say, you have a lot more luck than I ever had when I was metal detecting! The best I ever got was a 1940 6d (and even then it was almost worn completely smooth!).

A token of some kind?

When any coin gets graded like this I always ask myself the same question, how much is the plastic case worth? The answer is not a lot (in real terms) so I always avoid these 'professionally graded' examples. You are often paying a large premium for not a lot and I know many dealer friends who, upon getting a coin like this, break it straight out of the case. As for the coin, there are certainly nicer examples out there but those would certainly command far higher prices. As someone who dabbles in proof sovereigns, I would say wait out on this one.

Thank you, I would describe it as a half but a 'hack half' as it were. As you are well aware the Vikings relied on a bullion economy so I would suggest that a full coin has been 'hacked' to create the right weight for a trade or purchase. However I would be open to other suggestions. PM on the way.

Anglo-Saxon coinage is indeed a fascinating period of study, and in my opinion a under-appreciated area of numismatics when compared to say Bronze Pennies. However even though few people on the forum do collect to this period I still enjoy sharing what would normally just be kept in my cabinet for 'my eyes only' as it were.

From the collection: A rare and interesting Alfred the Great (871-899) Lunettes Penny. Obv: "+AELBRED:REX" Rev: "MON EDELULF ETA" Canterbury mint, moneyer Ethelwulf. GP.1,VAR. 2B, Lunettes A REV. Found in Danelaw '5 Boroughs'. Roxholme near Cranwell, Sleaford, Lincolnshire in 2016 (Recorded with Fitzwilliam Museum). Possibly a coin paid as 'tribute' to the Viking Great Army. Small amount of marginal flan damage but the portrait and title are intact and the coin is very stable with no further cracking. A coin which I am currently looking to move on so if you are interested, don't be shy! Cameron

A real shambles of a catalogue, lots of quite odd mistakes with many over graded coins. Not for me this time round.

Hi all, Just a post to show one of my latest pickups from the LCF on Saturday. A rather nice Burgred (King of Mercia 852-874) lunettes-type penny. Obv: bvrgred rex, Rev. mon cenred eta. London mint, monyer Coenræd. Brought it for the quality of the obverse portrait of the King, reverse seems to have some kind of die flaw crack, is not on the obverse and the coin is still very stable which would potentially point to that being the cause rather than something more sinister. All in all a lovely coin, my pictures really don't do it justice. Did anyone else have any luck at the fair?
