I haven't really kept records on this variety other than unc specimens of which the Bamford/Alderley, Workman and mine (ex-Colin Adams) are the only ones I've seen.
-
Don't worry, Pete, it's well accepted as a rare variety now.

Well, he did catalogue the 1897 dot as F147 (and probably regrets it)

There's a fortune to be made by adding random "dots" to pennies......................

Can anyone see the 8 over a 6 in lot 1197 ? I can't.

Just tried again and it worked with the same image as before - very strange !

This beauty went for only £825-00 in Jun 2014 !

2* is a newly discovered obverse - unrecorded by Freeman or Gouby - a variant of obverse 2 (Gouby D) with 2 extra border teeth such that the A of VICTORIA points directly to a tooth rather than to a gap between teeth as on normal obverse 2 (Gouby D). See my varieties website for more details.

I'm trying to upload an image of only a few Kb but get the message that the maximum is 500Kb - is there a problem ?

Cathrine, I don't know what you paid for the coin but I'd be inclined to keep it. These coins very rarely survive in pristine condition unless they've been protected from day one and your own coin photos show exactly how most of these early proofs appear in hand. I just wish I had the knowledge to photograph my coins in the way that PCGS did - my collection would look absolutely stunning !

No-one yet has answered my question as to how PGCS managed to produce such fantastic photos.......
-
Really nice coin and that's how photos of my own F4 come out - wonder how PCGS make the coin look so perfect ????????
-
Thanks, Dave - I got that OK.

That video never loaded for me.

OK - what does a sovereign weigh ? And are they a (pretty) standard weight ?

How much relevance can we give to a quoted weight of a coin ? I have a cheap Chinese electronic scales which gives a very different reading to a coin that I bought with a quoted weight. I cannot believe that these scales are particularly accurate, especially when they give readings to 2 decimal places of grams. Freeman weighed most of his coins I believe but using what technology ? And if coins weigh differently on every cheap scales, is there any point to weighing them ?

7 hours ago, Guest AtlasNumismatics said:This is the Spink coin. At the time of the auction it was heavily covered in PVC plastic residue from improper storage in a PVC plastic holder. PVC residue must be removed to avoid damage to the coin from hydrochloric acid released by decaying PVC and we did so. This is a standard and non-invasive procedure.
James, are you happy to describe how you do this ? I have one or two coins that would benefit from such treatment.
Cheers, Richard

The camera never lies ?????????????????

Spink photos really don't do justice:

It looks very like the one sold at Spinks in June this year - lot 1513. Some spots in the same place.
-
Bog standard F10 (2+D) although the specifics say N over Z. The bidding history looks very suspicious.
-
Take a look at this - something very fishy going on.............
-
Thanks for the pics Paddy.

Can someone post photos of the 2 obverses please.

Nice coin. Not the rarest, as you say, but much harder than most to get in good condition, and virtually impossible to find in BU.
