  1. yes very difficult unless the image is good and has been photographed central and at right angles ....😑 but still a nice coin 👍
  2. I would say no, the border teeth are too close together. 👍
  3. Freeman mentions two 1861 Halfpennies with 6 over 8 in the date and lists them as F274A Obv5 RevE and F282A, Obv 7 Rev G. Also listed is a 1861 Penny 6 over 8, F30, Obv 6 Rev G. Also reported an 1861 Halfpenny F276 Obv6, RevE 6 over 6 (same die as the F274A) Miceal Gouby reports an 1866 penny first 6 over 8. It has been assumed that the wrong punch was used during a die repair In the case of the halfpenny Rev G was used up until 1873 and the penny Rev G until 1875 what if Dies were prepared in bulk to be used over a period of more than 10 years, this would mean that the last two digits of the date would be added at a later time. This opens the possibility that these coins originate not by an 8 punch but rather by a misplaced 6 as seen in the pic below of an F274 6 over a higher 6. If members have examples of these coins and a few minutes to spare perhaps you could look for traces of the top of the lower six poking out above and post results here.
  4. Hello, are there any halfpenny experts amongst you? I am looking for any reference to an 1861 Halfpenny, R over B in BRITT. Freeman, Gouby, Dracott, Spink, Coincraft, Coin Year Book and Collectors Coins GB have no mention of this error. Has anyone ever heard of it or indeed seen it mentioned anywhere? Does any one have a copy of Peck and would be so kind as to see if this coin is mentioned by him? Thank you, Gary
  5. Have a look at this site. Münzauktion this is a popular German site for German and World Coins. The language can be changed to english and if you click on the MA Shops you can get a feel for the Prices of German coins.
  6. Post unification? this is basically the standard Catalog for german Coins Schön available on Amazon. It is however in German. A more comprehensive Catalog is German coins 1601 to present from Krause which is in english Krause for an unbelievable price of 97 quid..... used....!!! or €56 used on German Amazon Krause I'm shocked at those prices!!!! I bought this Cat a few years back and the price on the cover is $59!!!

    Coin of Nero

Here is a Denari of the Nero. I am having difficulty identifying it and would like your opinions. The bust is wrong and I can find no corresponding coin on the net! Is this a fake? It is 3.32g in weight and has a Dia. of 17mm seems to be silver.
  8. here is another one. weight 4.11g and Dia. 22-23mm a nice looking coin but is it a fake? How do I find out?

    Coin of Nero

Thanks for the input folks. Its not a detecting find. It comes from an old collection which was inherited by a friend of mine. He has nil interest in coins and asked me to check it out unfortunately I have nil experience in Ancient coins so am relying on the net I just cannot find a coin on the net where the bust corresponds! The reverse is almost right IVPPITER CVSTOS with the word CVSTOS extremely weak on the right of the figure. I feel a trip to a reputable Dealer coming on.....

    Theodosius II Miliarense

Thanks for the input and the link Tom. I agree it looks too perfect but apparently its from a good source. I think I'll have it looked at by someone with knowledge of ancient coins.
  11. There is a thread for this topic already (1911 Penny) in which there seems to be some confusion as to how many obv types there are. If members could send me pictures of thier 1911 pennies, "I" of BRITT to gap and "I" to tooth then I will undertake a comparison and try to sort this out once and for all. Send them to gary.brett (that funny symbol) uk2.net. (thats so I dont get flooded by spam!) you all know what the funny symbol in email addresse's is! Please make sure that the pics are 800x800 pixels or more and of reasonable quality and I will do the rest and post the results. Please make sure the pic is taken square to the coin , not angled! Thanks will give me something to do at the weekend I did post this under the old thread but it keeps getting buried by new posts and threads so forgive me for starting an extra thread..... I have, so far, recieved pics from davidrj and Peckris is working on it so I hope I get some more respones, thanks in advance Gary

    more FAKES

The German Ebay site states that is not permitted to sell replicas of Coins however the problem is to convince Ebay that these coins are fake? I did not notice the gkcoins watermark but even that is not enough to prove that the 1887 set is a fake as the now seller could have bought the set and is reselling! Who is gkcoins and who did they sell the set to?
  13. Happy Birthday Bob. Have a good one.

    more FAKES

http://www.ebay.de/sch/Münzen-Europa-/7975/m.html?item=331412855199&hash=item4d29bed99f&pt=M%C3%BCnzen_Medaillen&_ssn=coin-Olympic Spotted on the German Ebay, 1903 Halfcrown, 1887 Jubilee Set, Proof 1826 Crown and more! Real or not? They look good..... I for one am getting worried if these are fakes!
  15. I have just acquired this 1840 Rupee and the only info I have is from the Krause Cat and I am a little confused! It says there are three different Mints that minted the 1840 Rupee Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. Am I right in assuming that if the truncation has only the engravers initial WW then it is from the Calcutta Mint? WWB or WWS = Madras Bombay? This one only has W.W. on the truncation. Who is in the know on Indian coins? Thanks in advance Gary

    1840 Rupee

Thanks for the book info Badger. I have ordered a copy

    1840 Rupee

I've got quite hooked on the Rupees. They are quite easy to come by and are not that expensive they also look good. The 1840 is only low grade but the price I paid reflected that. Is there any good Literature on Indian coins? Having looked at the pics of the coppers I think I will have to try and get hold of a few. The quarter and half Anna's look to be nice coins!
  18. 10 years old. Bin it unless the wife is attached to it like you said modern ovens are more efficient and easier to keep clean

    selling big lot of coins

Good advice from Chris and Declan is just being honest.

    spot the expensive mistake

I think what he means is that it is an 1859 Farthing not 1839! Although in that condition it does not make much difference
  22. my fishing gear consists of 3 rods and 4 reels all of them from the early eighties, still do the job though! So I suppose my answer is no I don't go over the top.........
