Mian104 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 (edited) Hi all - I'm looking for some help. I have what looks like an old coin but I can't find anything about it - was hoping you guys could help shed some light ? It has a man head on one side with what looks like a braded head piece and has some Roman or Greek looking letter around the edges. The other side looks like a full figure standing up.I think it's made from copper.I would upload a pic but I can't seem to figure out how to ?( any advice on this would also be helpful )Thanks in advance X Edited September 4, 2015 by Mian104 Quote
TomGoodheart Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 (edited) Welcome Mian. Very difficult to ID without a photo I'm afraid. Perhaps this will help? http://www.predecimal.com/forum/topic/7880-posting-pics/ Oh, and if you manage to get a photo up let us know the diameter (and weight if possible) as that helps too! . Mian104 Posted September 4, 2015 Author Posted September 4, 2015 (edited) Mine is A lot dirtier and in not as good condition so it might not even be that one ? Edited September 4, 2015 by Mian104 Quote
TomGoodheart Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 (edited) I'm afraid the Google links just take me to a search page. However I think I can make out the legend IMP CEA L(?) VESP AVG which would make it a coin of Vespasian. This sort of thing perhaps: A pic of the reverse of the coin might help. I'm assuming it's bronze or similar. The diameter might be useful too. I have to say, on first impressions my feeling is that this is a modern copy. The laurel wreath is quite crude and the odd legend doesn't fit with a regular issue coin. The portrait looks more like Constantius than Vespasian to me. However, Roman coins aren't my area, so I could be completely wrong! . Edited September 4, 2015 by TomGoodheart Quote
Mian104 Posted September 4, 2015 Author Posted September 4, 2015 It's probably not the best pic I'mAfraid but .... Quote
TomGoodheart Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Yeah, that works. I think I can make out a figure holding a cornucopia (horn of plenty) Bit like this: Trouble is it could be a number of different Goddesses from Felicitas (I also think I can make out AVG to the right as perhaps in FELICITAS AVG) to Pax or whatever .. but it's a start I hope. Maybe look here: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/vespasian/t.html Though as I say, it might still be a copy .. . Quote
Mian104 Posted September 4, 2015 Author Posted September 4, 2015 How would I find out if it's a copy ? I guess just take it somewhere ?If it's a real one does it have any value do you know ? Or is it pretty common ?Thanks for your insight btw .. I am absolutely clueless and couldn't find anything about it so you e been very helpful x Quote
