bobo13 Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Hi all Any ideas of this date variety? I can't see any repunched 3 (3 over 3) variety on google. Thanks Quote
Rob Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 There is no reason why any digit or letter should not be recut. In the Victorian era, dies were regularly reinforced by repunching a letter to 'unblock' letters. A 3 would be no different in this regard. It is important not to get too hung up over repunched letters which are not errors, just a normal feature when taken in context. Quote
Prax Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Agree with Rob. Freeman in his book says that one has to stop somewhere else every coin is a variety in itself. That said this coin has a clear 3 over 3 so to call it an overdate is warranted but to call it a new variety would be taking it a bit too far. Quote
bobo13 Posted March 29, 2015 Author Posted March 29, 2015 Thanks for the help, I like these bronze coins and was just wondering if there is such variety, it seems this is common in pennies.Otherwise, I have many farthings from the 1860s with similar overdates.Have a nice day! Quote
