I spent the last 12 years of my time in the Royal Navy as an NBCD (I) Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, and Damage Control Instructor. We were shown film footage of the Kurdish villages where Saddam had ordered the use of Sarin nerve gas. I wont go into to much detail but if you had seen these images of men women and children after the attacks, you may have more of an open mind on the case for war against this regime. Sarin is a particularly nasty one, ALL bodily fluids are emitted from you out of EVERY orifice in the body in a matter of minutes.

Nobody in their right mind wants to go to war, but in this case I think we were totally justified.

With all due respect Smudge.Sarin gas and other chemical weapons were sold to Iraq during the Iran/Iraq war back in the '80's when Iran was perceived as the greater threat to the U.S and it's allies.

Were you also shown the damage done to Iraqi civilians due to 'daisycutter bombs' and depleted uranium-used exclusively by coalition forces?

Saddam was a nasty ba@/"£& yes but he was an ally when it suited the west and the war against Iraq was not totally justified,in fact it was illegal as it (a pre-emptive strike) went against the UN charter.

Got it in one.

Someone stated earlier that if Blair had told the truth about the real reasonwe had gone to war then he would not have had the majority of support.

Question is even when he lied about WMD did he have a majority support then?

Does Blair listen to the majority?

Now let me see what do they call it when a person rules by the minority over the general will of the majority? Despotism? Absolutism? Dictatorship?

They say he refuses to resign, if amajority expressed a wish for him to step aside and he refused (which i think he would), then what do you get? Democracy? The many have no power in this country any more, when he's in he's in and he won't go. Impeachment anyone?

Not many political figures do listen to the majority...sometimes it costs lives when a political figure doesnt take facts seriously (GWB ignored threats made against the twin towers)...

The public has no say in politics if you ask me...votes, the result of a public vote is what the government or parliament wants it to be...

Which is why i think in practice a democracy is a bad thing cos it potentially lets anyone into politics. And i mean anyone.

Great idea in theory maybe, but is it really better? or is democracy just what governments keep telling the populace what it needs and wants as a way of justifying their own positions?

 I think the trouble with politics in the west is the party system. If we had local representatives truly giving the views of local people in a national forum, we may get down to democracy! But don't hold your breath! There are too many vested interests out there.
