p1lyp Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I hope it's not regarded as poor form to ask for help with your first post. Humble apologies if it is.I acquired this Stephen penny from eBay a few weeks ago and I've been unable to work out the mint/moneyer. It's a lozenge fleury type minted in Lincoln or Nottingham S 1301. I believe Swein(e) was the only moneyer known at Nottingham and I don't think it's him. Any ideas?By the way, I'm a coin collector from Cornwall having started picking pre '47 coins from change 40 years ago. I'm also a detectorist - I would have loved to have found this coin. I understand it came from a Lincolnshire field. Norman coins are practically unknown from Cornish fields. We preferred turnips and wenches back then! Quote
TomGoodheart Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 (edited) Hi and welcome p1lyp. Many people join just to ask a question. It's fine! Though you might have to wait a bit for a reply as there are fewer members with knowledge of such issues than for milled coins. I dare say someone will be on this evening who might be able to help. ..Meantime, I've tweaked your image. Are you sure the moneyer is there? If I had to guess (on the basis that I think I can see two 'N's at 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock of the image) I'd say it says [..] LINCON before the : I'm wondering if the moneyer's name is in the missing bit of legend? Not that I know anything about such things!Edit: ..PAEN:ON ?? (again Lincoln) http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=6&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CEoQFjAF&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.britnumsoc.org%2Fpublications%2FDigital%20BNJ%2Fpdfs%2F1966_BNJ_35_9.pdf&ei=GeRwU52hKai57Aa1yIDwAQ&usg=AFQjCNF1dT0-C9v956XLebFskLPYGqH_RwYeah, really scraping the guess barrel now! p1lyp Posted May 12, 2014 Author Posted May 12, 2014 Excellent effort TG. For what it's worth, I think :ON: is present and the mint is absent. Stephen's moneyers seemed to like the use of the colon. Paien is a real contender on the basis that I think it's an N before :ON: and he's the only Lincoln moneyer with a name ending in an N but the first bit of his name isn't jumping out at me.Maybe it is Swein and I'm just not seeing it! JPK Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 My feelings are that it is sveinn at Nottingham ,I would suggest you could try Dr Martin Allen at the fitzwilliam,if you've got the find location or near, you could get it recorded on the EMC. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I don't think the legend would support SWEIN ON SNOTIG judging by what letters I can see.If I had to say, I'd go with Paien on Nico, although this spelling of the moneyer is more often associated with Northampton rather than Lincoln. Quote
