hi i have an old i think gold coin that i don't seem able to identify. It has a lion with raised paw possibly with book in paw and writing around the edge but not very clear and on the other side is an orb with a cross on top in side a club ( like the playing card) shape , also with letters around the edge. The coin is about an inch across and the shape of the letters lead me to believe that it's probably around the 10ad mark.

Anyone got any ideas? i can for ward a picture if anyone thinks they may have an idea

If you register, then attach a picture, we will get a better idea of what it is. At the minute, I'm thinking western Europe states (pre-unification) - Wurzburg, Bavaria, Hanover, Savoy - actually, it could be Hesse, because I think that has a lion it its flag. But then again, I'm not expert on this type of coinage!

Are you sure it's gold? Doesn't look very gold from the colour.

What's the other side got on it?

It's a Jeton, circa 16th Century, made of Bronze and used as a counting piece. (in the pre abacus days!)

I'm afraid that in that condition it will be of little value.
