Guest Clive Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Hi, I have a coin here that has no denomination on it, it is a copper coin with a young queen victoria with a bun in her hair. it says Victoria Dei Gratia 1840 with the date under head.On the back it is a picture of britannia sat with a trident in her left hand and a sheild in her right facing right. and it says round it Britanniar: Reg: Fid: Def: and under her it looks like a laurel or something like it.Will post a photo of it later when done. Please help we have no idea what it is. Quote
Sylvester Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Tell me how big it is and i'll tell you what denomination it is.In mm or inches. Quote
Guest Clive Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Thanks, it is 22mm hope it is helpful Quote
Chris Perkins Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Then it's a farthing:http://www.predecimal.com/britishcoinsiden...ntification.htmDespite what your wife may say, size does matter and when identifying coins millimetres count. If it looks average, like this one:http://www.predecimal.com/forsale/7/farthing1843.jpgThen it should be worth £2-£4. If it's worse, it may struggle for 50p, and of course if it's better it'll be worth more. Quote
Guest Clive Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 The one you are showing is a 1943 one, what about a 1940 one, which I am struggling to find listed anywhere. and my wife has no complaints.Cheers for your input it is much appreciated. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Same values for both 1840 and 1843. Quote
Guest Clive Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Thanks all, really thought I had something special there, but hey ho its thats the way it goes.Cheers anyway, now at least I know what I am looking at. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 Yes, unfortunately everyone who finds a coin dated before 1971 (or better still, with the Reverse upside down!) thinks they have something special these days.Leave me alone, i'm trying to make a profit! Quote
Chris Perkins Posted September 26, 2004 Posted September 26, 2004 and my wife has no complaints. That's one of those replies that men like to give about 90% of the time isn't it! Just like: Q: 'Do you have any children?'A: 'Not as far as I know' (nudge nudge, wink wink) Quote
