Master Jmd Posted September 19, 2004 Posted September 19, 2004 Ok, i received a tin of coins today from my aunt, and one of which was was a copper/bronze(?) token type coin.Obverse: H.R.H THE PRINCESS CHARLOTTE, circled around the bust of (presumably) princess Charlotte.Reverse: BRITANNIA MOURNS HER PRINCESS DEAD., in legend circled around an picture of a palmtree above an urn on a podium(?), DIED NOV.6 1817 AGED 21 in exergue.Measures exactly 1 inch, and is slightly offstruck with the edge being wider on one side.Any ideas? Her parents' relationship was quite frosty and she was born during their brief union, after which they were never reconciled. After the separation, she was rarely allowed to see her mother. Princess Charlotte was arranged to be married to the Prince of Orange, heir to the Dutch throne, but broke the agreement after hearing of his "colourful" escapades at Ascot. She married Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. The Prince Regent (George IV) hated the marriage because he had always wanted the Prince of Orange for a son-in-law. The Princess died in childbirth, giving birth to a stillborn (Leopold's child) at the age of 21. Quote
