stu1976 Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Hello Numismatics, I have what I think is a gold half sovereign from 1819, it belongs to a collection of coins that belonged to my grandfather. With the provided photos can anyone tell me if this is real? It would seem from research that this must be a fake, as nonewere reportedly made in that year (half sovereigns). Anyway, I'm a complete novice, so would appreciate any help, opinionsetc. Many thanks, Quote
Coinery Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Sorry, but yes, a certain counterfeit coin!Just out of interest, what makes you say half-sov? It looks more HC in design? Edited January 19, 2014 by Coinery Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I agree with Stuart. It's an 1819 halfcrown forgery. Quote
JPK Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 It looks like one of these I'm afraidhttp://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=8109&cat=274 Quote
stu1976 Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 Thanks, very useful and cleared up any confusion :-)In terms of the Half-Sovereign description rather than Half-Crown, I couldn't find an exact match on any of the descriptions on the auction sites, or expert sites describing the coin itself. E.g. Garter around the coat of arms. I'm a novice .... although more enlightened now thank you :-)Cheers,Stu Quote
