Nek17 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Hi there, a while ago I posted message seeking grading suggestions on some GIII coins and now CGS report came back as two are 'unauthenticated' I will check the coins again when I receive them, however I don't get the comment on the 'spike' though...CGS grading:We have examined your coin and have found the following:-1) On the reverse the coin shows a cluster of raised bubbles following DEF in the legend.2) On the obverse the coin has a raised 'spike' in the field extending from the rear of the truncation. We are therefore unable to authenticate this coin. Nek17 Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 We have examined your coin and have found the following:-1) On the reverse the second letter R in BRITANNIARUM is broken at the top.2) On the obverse there is a raised 'spike' in the field extending beyond the rear of the truncation and also below the truncation almost diectly above the first 1 in the date, inconsistent with a mint productWe are therefore unable to authenticate this coin. Nek17 Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 CGS60 -Low EF, in fact I worried about this the most, it looked like being cleaned. Quote
Coinery Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I have to say, buying these G3 pieces is becoming a bit of a nightmare. I'd definitely spend a month digesting seuk's site before making any big money moves, it'll be interesting to hear his thoughts on these 2 (whether he has them documented as counterfeits/modern copies, etc.).As he has probably the best resource for these coins available to-date, it could be worth him centralising all the above noted points by CGS into one place, albeit non contemporary coinage, no doubt? Nek17 Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 Yeah, I have sent him a msg and I did spend good time on his website studying these, however it seems there are more unknown 'fakes' flowing around BTW, these two passed all visual/material test methods I could gather. Quote

I have now contacted eBay sellers, fingers crossed. Quote
seuk Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 My interest is in the contemporary counterfeits which are mostly milled from engraved dies hence more or less different from the original design. So my homepage will be of little value in regard to modern cast forgeries which these seems to be. Cast forgeries are likely to exist of every coin of value and will be difficult if not impossible to spot from an auction picture alone. Quote
