colliewalker1 Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 I am attaching a photo of a George IV Half Crown currently offered on Ebay.I am VERY new to coin collecting but feel that a coin which is (a) relatively unworn but has some damage (not excessive of course) is more appealing than ( one which is well worn but is undamaged. This coin is an example of (a) having a deep looking scratch under the eye.I would be interested to know the views of other members - would they find this damage acceptable besring in mind the good imprint remaining AND what would be an appropriate bid? Thanks in anticipation -Denis Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 What year is the halfcrown? It looks like its a solid VF, possibly a GF. If it is a common year I would bid between £40 and £60 Quote
colliewalker1 Posted August 17, 2004 Author Posted August 17, 2004 Hi halfpenny john - thanks for your very rapid reply. The year of this half crown is 1823.It sounds as though you wouldn't be too bothered about the mark under the eye - it will be interesting to see how the bidding goes - I may have to raid the piggy bank!Cheers -Denis Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 Can you post a link please, I am interested to see the item. Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 Just seen it after doing a quick search- in my opinion, you should bid £35. Quote
Geoff T Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 I recently paid £33 for an 1823 half crown, second reverse, in about as good a condition as the one illustrated (but without the scratch). I considered this a fair price. Quote
colliewalker1 Posted August 19, 2004 Author Posted August 19, 2004 Geoff -Out of interest did you buy the coin on Ebay or from an online dealer? Quote
Geoff T Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Out of interest did you buy the coin on Ebay or from an online dealer?I bought it direct from the dealer at York Coin Fair last month. I do occasionally use eBay but find I'm using it less and less because I want the chance to see what I'm buying first.Geoff Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 I also like to see what I am buying first. I have not used Ebay to buy coins for about 6 months now, and I find fairs are the best way to buy coins. Mail-order is good but I am sometimes aprehensive about some dealers. Quote
william Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 I do not go to fairs as there are none near me. I order mainly off the internet, off sites where i can trust that the item will be as described *points at Chris*. I sometimes go into the odd coin or antique shop to have a look as well. Quote
colliewalker1 Posted August 20, 2004 Author Posted August 20, 2004 The George IV half crown fetched £45 0n Ebay - wow!I think that sometimes items on Ebay fetch more than one would pay a dealer..... Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted August 20, 2004 Posted August 20, 2004 Sometimes they do that, maybe two people were fighting over it? Quote
colliewalker1 Posted August 20, 2004 Author Posted August 20, 2004 The winning bid was made a couple of minutes before 'time' - the previous bid was 5 hours earlier - and only £1 less! Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted August 20, 2004 Posted August 20, 2004 That's what happens, I'm surprised that it wasn't in the last few seconds. Quote
