HAXall Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 I have found this coin or token in little collection of portugal cob coins.it looks like hammered silver plated copper or low content silver...it is 27 mm.what can it be? Quote
TomGoodheart Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 (edited) My guess is that it's Spanish. A billon coin of Castile & Leon, probably Henry IV (Enrique) though the name is difficult to make out. At 27mm maybe a Cuartillo?CuartilloThe star to the left of the bust may signify the Cuenca mint. Like this ...Maybe! Edited November 8, 2012 by TomGoodheart Quote
scott Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 yes that is spanish, seen a couple on ebay recentlybeing with the bunch of coins you said, then it fits. Quote
HAXall Posted November 8, 2012 Author Posted November 8, 2012 Thank You for your help, i was wondering - what is t made from? is it valuable? Quote
TomGoodheart Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Thank You for your help, i was wondering - what is t made from? is it valuable?Billon is largely copper I believe, with a small amount of silver either mixed in or as a wash. I understand a Cuartillo is a quarter of a Real, so quite a small denomination, maybe equivalent to twopence?Value? Not my area I'm afraid, but a search showed a few similar on ebay and the following auction results: mcsearchso my guess is that, unless the mint or variety are scarce, then in this condition, not so much. You might be lucky though and get £20 on ebay? An interesting find though ... Quote
HAXall Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 So i think it is worth to keep it!Thank You Very much for Your Help! Quote
Peterkin Posted November 23, 2012 Posted November 23, 2012 So i think it is worth to keep it!Thank You Very much for Your Help!Yes. Definitely a keeper, even although the condition's not up to much. You have a whole load of history, right there with that coin. Enrique IV was nicknamed "the impotent", but if you go back to about his great grandfather I suppose - Pedro The Cruel, you find that he was, shall we say ... a bit of a swordsman. Even if you look up Cuenca, the name of the place where it was minted - you find that there was "the old mint" which did hammered coins, but then there was "the new mint" which did milled coins.
