is it just me or is the amount of junk being issued as non circulating legal tender coins getting ridiculous, we have coins commemorating barbie, transformers, peanuts, we have coins shaped like motor cycles, guitars, countries. what exactly these offer to our hobby mystifies me................

Hmm, does seem as though one could find enough dribble if one wished too, yet I find myself in pursuits of ever more elusive 16th century hammered gold coins which are in a finite and seemingly, diminishing, availability.

Yes, but I suppose it is a good deal for a lot of small/broke nations. Free money for having to do nothing (most of those coins are minted via private mints) but sign a paper. What I think is worse though are the circulating legal tender "commemorative" coins, at least the non circulating ones will only annoy you on an eBay listing.
