I recently purchased quantity of copper pennies

I thought I would clean one as in such a poor state. It appears to be 1864

What intrigues me is that there appears to be a small numeral between the 8 and 6 looks like a small 6

Maybe it is just corrosion but I did notice the 1863 one has dn varieties. Is there any possibilty a die number could be on the 1864??

I must admit, Russ, I thought die numbers above the date, only occurred on Victoria shillings between 1867 and 1879. I know they occur on florins, but in a different place. Never heard of them occurring on pennies.

Spink lists an 1863 with die number, prices as follows F 1350 and VF 3000. You never know your luck

Hey, again, you're right. I should have done my research.

There's one shown amongst the pics here

Worth quite a bit too, as can be seen in this further link

And it was a Scottish buyer, very nice indeed. Lets see the object in question :-)

I am kicking myself as I put it down after cleaning it. The date is quite worn and actually could be 3/5/4

I might be seeing things as it seems to be higher up. I will try and post if it turns up.

I might be seeing a bit of corrosion as a number.

You certainly know how to keep us in suspense Russ
