Half Penny Jon Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 First of all, it is a coin from the reign of George V, however, I will need a bit more information, eg. size, which denomination it is (what the coin sayd on the front eg. half penny, penny, half crown, farthing etc....), and grade (condition). Sylvester Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 condition is very good for its age. Tumble weed rolls past... Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 Ok. Ploggy, could you please tell me which date it is and if it is shiny or not? Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 Ploggy said it's 1916.If it's in average/worn condition it won't be worth much I'm afraid.I'm selling this one (and it's been there a while!) for 50p:http://www.predecimal.com/forsale/penny1917.jpg Quote
Guest Guest Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 i have pics of my coin but i'm not sure how to put them on the forum Quote
Emperor Oli Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 You would need to register first but it's not worth it really as it sounds worn. Quote
Guest ploggy Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 ok people. I have registered in order to show you the coin I am talking about. Here it is: Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 That is a 1916 Penny in 'Fine' condition and is worth no more than £1. However, the coin is in very good condition for it's age considering it would have been in circulation until 1971. Quote

Half Penny Jon Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 (edited) Why? . Oh yes, it was 1968 wasn't it? Edited May 23, 2004 by Half Penny Jon Quote
Geoff T Posted May 23, 2004 Posted May 23, 2004 No, it was 1971. They remained legal tender until the end of August that year as we had a changeover period after D-day on 15 February. You could still use old pennies as long as they were in multiples which added up to a decimal amount, like six for two and a half new pence. Quote
Sylvester Posted May 24, 2004 Posted May 24, 2004 no what i meant was there is no such thing as a coin that is good for its age, i've seen Ancient Greek coins in better condition. Quote
Master Jmd Posted May 24, 2004 Posted May 24, 2004 no what i meant was there is no such thing as a coin that is good for its age, i've seen Ancient Greek coins in better condition. exactly...i own a 1901 BU full lustre penny, i can say that that is good for its age, but i would not say that a 1916 fine condition penny is good... Emperor Oli Posted May 24, 2004 Posted May 24, 2004 Oli is gonna be critical of that comment.I think Sylvester and I were cast in the same mould! (Or struck with the same die?!) Quote
