Some questions,that i would like information please?

Hello all, its that pest again

I am going to ask some questions, some or all may seem stupid to others on this forum, from looking through the site i have only now found out the amount of work that all the "collectors" put into this subject.

Please understand that these question are GEUINE, they are coming from someone who is not a collector. I was given the coins by my father and he said "have a look there maybe something in there , they may just be rubbish".

All the coins were not sorted out, there are probably around a few hundered in all.

Here go's:

1) Do i leave the coins as they are or do i try an attempt to clean them?

2) Do members of this forum have knoweldge of Commonwealth coins?

3) I have got a lot of coins (mainly pennies or half pennies0 that are for want of a better word "flat". Is there any point in trying to do anything with these or should just put them in a "copper pile".

4) Am i right in thinking these were made from copper?

5) After seeing some of the points that collectors pick up on with coins, for me (not a collector) what would be the best way & cheapest to veiw the coins i have been given, good magnifying glass or microscope?

DON'T CLEAN THEM !! NEVER EVER EVER

If any of them are bun pennies and likely to be rare dates (e.g. 1869 1871 for pennies) and you can read the date, those are worth keeping hold of, the others are scrap as you say

bronze - which is mostly copper

A microscope would be overkill for any coin - a decent glass or lupe would be good, but if the coins are as rough as you say, it might be a wasted investment

Peckris Thank you for you time, effort and knowledge you have put into your reply its very much appreciated.

It will now save me going literally from coin to coin to try to study something that in all honesty i dont know what im looking for, if that makes sense?

As for the Microscope, your information in itself saved me a lot of money, i will go for a reasonably decent glass and take things from there.

I will NOT attempt to clean them at all.

I will now look for the dates you gave and take things from there.

I will do some research on the Commonwealth coins before i ask really stupid questions on this forum and hopefully a member will be able to answere any questions i have.

That would be useful - do you have any more information josie? (But generally, a microscope would get too close to the surface - in my experience, something with a range of magnification at least 4x going up to 16x could help with those obscure varieties).

Just seen on telle,on on the news maybe bbc or other channel all I can remember is that,I saw a microscope and then it flash.

I think the news it is about new and upcoming technology.

Did search in the web its application is to mostly cell and deseases.

Seen common searches is USB MC.

Thank you Josie, for your input unfortunately i do not think the coins that i have been given are "valuable" and therefor will probably not warrant the investment of such a good product?

At the moment im just going through them with a magnifying glass, then trying to look up on the inetrnet / on here asking questions of what i should be looking for , as im not a collector i dont know anything about the grading / coins / or how valuable each coin would be worth?
