newgold Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 Short question. Can anyone tell me why the 1946 and 1949 threepence coins are supposed to be so rare, uncirculated coins are in the £100 markThanks Quote
Master Jmd Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 they are rare because of their mintage;1946 = 620734 mintage1949 = 464000 mintagewhere as usually the mintage of them was around 50 million... Quote

Can anyone tell me why the 1946 and 1949 threepence coins are supposed to be so rare, uncirculated coins are in the £100 markThanks Well, they both have a lower mintage than the other ones. The mintage for the 1946 is 620,734, and the mintage for the 1949 is 464,000. These are worth more and are rarer, because the mintages of the other brass threepences are in the millions - they are much higher! In Coin Yearbook, the value of the 1946 is £225 in UNC, and the 1949 is worth £250 in UNC What book did you get the value £100 from btw? Quote

wybrit Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 They're not just expensive because of their mintage. I've seen bagfuls of both dates caried by London dealers. UNCs are very hard to come by and even high grade ones suffer from corrosion problems and lots of bagmarks.Same story with the 1950 and 1951 issues - very undervalued in high grade right now IMO.
