mary Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Hi there,I've found an unusual 20p in my purse today. It has last year's new 'jigsaw' design on the reverse, but is the old design on the 'heads' side. It has no date on it.Can't see why anyone would bother forging low value coins like this, so I'd love to know if anyone has any thoughts on it.Mary Quote

Its an error coin made by the Royal Mint, where they used the new reverse die paired accidentally with the old obverse die, giving a coin with no date. When these first came to light, they changed hands for a hundred pounds or so. Since then, more have been discovered and the price has dropped on eBay to around £20-25 each. If I were you I would get it on there quick before the law of supply and demand lowers the price still further!!Alternatively somebody on this forum may be interested. I already have one I'm afraid. mary Posted June 7, 2009 Author Posted June 7, 2009 Thanks for that - very interesting! There's 20 going on ebay right now, so obviously not that 'rare'! It's made for an interesting Sunday afternoon anyway! Quote
scott Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 its supposed to be rare.i havn't seen one yet either Quote
Coin_Hunter Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Worth 5-10 quid, but on ebay it's still 20-30. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 If it's a really nice example I'd give you £20 for it. I already have a couple but keep them coming.... Quote
mary Posted June 11, 2009 Author Posted June 11, 2009 Hi Chris, no, it's not a nice example! The reason my attention was drawn to it was because it looked too old and battered for a 'new' design! I'm going to keep it, for it's curiosity value. Thanks for the offer anyway!Mary Quote
DaveG38 Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Maybe somebody has taken to forging these mules for profit and that accounts for the battered look, although quite why they would then be in circulation I can't explain. Quote
