I am a newbie. Mate of mine says I have this coin and says its very rare. I just got this from a collection I inheristed from my gramps.

Can anyone kindly tell me if this is a rare coin and what it maybe worth. From what he said I thought it may be forth 10000 £. But I know how people can blow up things

Thanks

See if he'll give you the bargain sum of £500 for it!

What is his experience in numismatics that qualifies him to make such a bold statement?

Seriously, there are very few bun pennies that are worth £1000. You did neglect to tell us the date or some idea about the condition. Posting a picture is the best idea.

In my opinion the condition is Fine + with a clear date. The date is 1863 and the type is slender 3.

The coin was purchased by my grandpa and it was in his collection. We sold about 200 of his coins some shiny ones people would rate XF for about 130 $.

We were about to get rid of the rest another 300 coins for about 220 $ as well when a pal of mine pointed out that a lot of these coins that are rare. He did say that there was a 1863 coin with a die number 5 which sold recently for a sum I would not even imagine. I guess he thinks my math is very bad.

He singled out this coin alone and said it alone is worthover 50 times what you are getting for the lot

The coin is a Stacks Envelope dated 1976. It says VF and price on it is 5,44 so my mom assumed it was worth 5 $ 44 cents.

My pal disagrees and says it was purchased for 544 $ in 1976.

I have sent a mail out to Stacks to find out, but have not had a reply yet. So I thought I'd post on this forum.

Any help is much appriciated.

That all sounds more interesting. It always sounds more interesting when an actual collection that someone has bought over the years is concerned....rather than an accumulation of what is usually scrap metal!

1863 with a smaller straighter '3' is Freeman 294. It's scarcer but I don't think incredibly rare. There are other members here that know halfpennies better. $5.44 seems an odd price to pay for anything, so is $544.00! I wouldn't have thought it would have been as much as the latter in 1976.

Be great to see a picture.

I'm an active buyer of British coins, you could send them to me for a quote, which is always 60% of how I price them.

If yours is a slender 3 really then it will be the only secoind coin of that type, I rather doubt that but you can double check with the only known example which has been offered for sale.

If yours is really a slender 3 then we can arrange for a viewing and I can buy it (I can offer upto 10000 £ if the coin is in better state than the one shown in the pic)

Let us know my email id is glass_lid@yahoo.com

there must be more then 1 slender 3... hard to believe they would make a dye for a single strike

In the 30 years that I have collected, I have come across the slender 3 twice and they are both in auctions offering the same coin. This coin is the one shown in Freeman's book.

I to believe that there must be another one somewhere but I have not see it or heard of anyone having one in their collection either.

Thanks for the info.

Much appriciate it, I have been told that my coin is not slender 3, it is an open 3.

Let me know if you are interested Dave. I stay in OM

I did look at the link you have provided the sellers have mentioned that the coin is unique, its a shame mine could not refute the claim
