PhilipC Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Hello, I foun on our local auction this coin (see picture). Maybe someone can say isn't this coin forgery and how much it can be worth? Thanks for help.P.S. sorry about pictures quality - that's sellers photo.I'll have to check my 1795 set but it looks a bit odd.On the face of it this is a 1795 maundy penny worth about £10-£20 given the photo. However I am puzzled why the legend sizes are so different so I'll check if I have time.Philip Quote
Andriulis Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 Yes, it looks a little odd. I my version of "Coins of England" (Spink) there isn't photos of Georgius III one pence silver coins. That's why I'm asking here. Quote
Red Riley Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Yes, it looks a little odd. I my version of "Coins of England" (Spink) there isn't photos of Georgius III one pence silver coins. That's why I'm asking here.It is part of a maundy set issued around the time when the 1d-4d silver coins ceased to be used for anything other than ceremonial purposes; hence why they are often not listed separately. We are not talking rare here, and they were very fiddly to make, so I suspect the chances of this particular coin being a forgery are quite low. Incidentally, I would concur with PhilipC's valuation although the photos are such, that I would suggest a large margin for error! Quote
