MikeCav Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I have a coin dated 1783 bronze coloured about size of a modern 1 pence piece, on one side it has the letters RF in front of each other with a crown above the letters and on the revers has a circle divided in to five sections with two horses opposite each other and two birds in other opposite sections the circle also has a crown above it. Trying to get pics up but any help would be great thanks. mike Quote
Chris Perkins Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 RF is usually Republique Francaise (with the accents). Quote
Rob Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 (edited) If it is 1783 it won't be Republique Francaise because France was still a monarchy then, so any coins would have the king and his titles on the obverse. I couldn't find anything in Krause under France that fits the description. Try and post a picture. Edited March 9, 2009 by Rob Quote

MikeCav Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 ts prussian Thanks for that I have been trying to find more info on the coin now that i know its Prussian but nothing really comes up online! Why would that be cause there not common ? Anybody with more info give me a shout.Mike Quote
Chris Perkins Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Common or not, it's in a bit of a sorry state so is unlikely to be worth much. Generally all European coppers of that kind of age are not that desirable it that condition, unless it happens to be a very scarce date. I don't have any books that cover German pre 1800 unfortunately. Quote
Rob Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 (edited) I only have 1997 Krause, but there isn't anything illustrated that matches the design. The monogram dividing the date looks ok for KM12 & KM12b which is a 1/48th taler except I can't see a letter (A or F) under the monogram and the latest they go to is 1770. These are struck in .250 silver, so with such a high copper content could possibly look like the picture if badly corroded. However, there is no match for the reverse design indicated for any denomination. Copy or medallet? Edited March 11, 2009 by Rob Quote
