Russ777 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I am interested in a shield 20p 2008 (dated) that stood out from the rest. It looks matt compared to all the others in a bag of uncirculated coins. It as if the top layer of metal is missing as there is no silver sheen and it has a flecked appearance when you look close up and also a general dull and pick tinge. Very noticeable either close up or against any normal coin. What could cause this apperance I am not an expert on moden coins, so where could I get it authenticated if it was worthwhile? Are the coins sprayed with a final silver metal coat as this appears to be lacking it. I am certain it is not tampered with as came in a whole bag of uncirculated coins....Is anyone familiar with the manufacturing process as to the metals used would it be cupro nickel. Also interesting is the fact the two 00 of 2008 are linked by a line in the middle definitely looks etched not scratched rather like a pair of spectacles!!!If anyone can shed some light on this? Could this be significant if a metal finishing error by the mint??? Quote
Chris Perkins Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I believe the blanks are hardened, perhaps it missed that stage. Or some other stage. Please post a picture. Quote

scott Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 quite a few errors on these 20ps, been keeping then back when i get them, i have noticed that the first one i got has a brownish lustre compared to the other 2, i have found that sometimes cupro-nickel does get brown stripes, (have a 20p with browny stripes going across).i have a 1979 5p thats more brown then white too, and a 1968 10p (well worn though) which is almost brown. Any ideas? Quote
Hussulo Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 The new 20p coins are minted using an alloy of 84% coper and 16% nickel. The older ones where 75% copper, 25% nickel.Looking at the picture my guess would be that the coin you have has missed a plating processperhaps it missed some stage that normally makes the coin appear more silver.Hus Quote
