RLC35 Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 Hi,Attached are 2 photos of an 1843 Farthing. In the first picture it appears to be a Roman I for 1, but in the second photo, at a higher magnification it looks more like a re-engraved 1. Has anyone else found this type? I will send a 200x in the next email. In the 200x it really looks more like a re-engraved 1.Bob C. Quote

They are not THE 1843 Roman I variety, because on that coin the 1 and 8 are almost touching, however it does give the impression if lit correctly (like your first picture) that it is a roman 1. I have seen several of these on ebay go for decent prices where people mistake them for the Roman 1 variety. Edited November 8, 2008 by Colin G. Quote
RLC35 Posted November 8, 2008 Author Posted November 8, 2008 Colin, Thanks for your expertise! I really didn't think this was a Roman I, but wanted another opinion. I pulled up a photo of a "real" Roman I from the Colin Cooke website, and it verified what you have stated about the I being closer to the 8. This is a friends coin, and he wanted me to help him determine its validity. Have a great weekend.Bob C. Quote
