Iggy Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Hello everybody,I'm new here so please be gentle! I was given my Grandads coin collection way back in 1982, it consists of probably 300-400 coins of varying types, ages and conditions. He'd been collecting since before the war and as a kid I used to help him put them in envelopes etc and look at values in books. There were one or two that were worth a few quid and at least one coin that we could never find in any books so thought it might be rare. I've not touched them for 20 years except occasionally looking in the boxes and I'd like to get them valued. What's the best way, do I take them somewhere as a job lotor just go through them and get values on any that are unusual/rare?Cheers Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Whereabouts are you? Perhaps one of the members could take a look for you. Quote

You will no doubt then get several members giving their opinions, which will at least be a start. Quote
Iggy Posted October 9, 2008 Author Posted October 9, 2008 (edited) I've taken photos of a few of the interesting ones but I'm having problems uploading them. I usually use imageshack to upload to forums? The collection includes the usual halfpenny's, sixpences, threpenny bit etc. Plus a selection of Canadian, Maltese etc. and plenty of oddments. I live in Nottinghamshire. Edited October 9, 2008 by Iggy Quote
Iggy Posted October 9, 2008 Author Posted October 9, 2008 (edited) Whoops, sorry. Edited October 9, 2008 by Iggy Quote
Chris Perkins Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 No, I doubt it very much. This looks like an accumulation rather than a collection. The odd commemorative coin, the odd medal but mostly stuff from circulation in the usual circulated condition. Good to see an old Collectors' Coin book among them! Obviously I can't see them all and there does appear to be some silver there, so not entirely valueless but most probably of pretty low value. That George III coin that you posted singularly looks look a forgery of a shilling. Doesn't make it valuable, just slightly more interesting. Quote
Red Riley Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 So am I rich??!!Normal advice would be to get a book to establish what you've got, but it's such a hotch-potch, you'd need half a dozen books and even then have some left over! It may not be worth much, but such mixed collections can be great fun for kids when they come across them for the first time and can even be the spur to start a more organised collection (that's how it was for me).So my advice to you? Put it in the loft for a further generation to come along and then present it to them at an opportune moment. They will love it.Incidentally, the 1873 threepenny joey is worth about a fiver, but beyond that I would be guessing. Quote
Iggy Posted October 12, 2008 Author Posted October 12, 2008 Ah well, looks like it's back to the day job then! Thanks for the replies though. To be honest I couldn't part with them anyway...but the kids aren't getting their sticky little mitts on them just yet. Quote
