Hi Everyone,

I'm new here (I signed up a while back but have been too busy to get involved until now).

I was wondering if anybody has, or knows where I can find detail on the varieties of edge lettering on the 1951 Crown. While not specifically a collector of crowns, I was given a second example a few weeks back with the edge lettering "upside down" compared with my original. (ie, the lettering is the right way up when the coin is obverse down on one, reverse down on the other). I've checked ESC and there doesn't appear to be any distinction.

Thanks,

Craig

It's completely random so probably about 50/50

There are also a couple of documented edge errors caused by slipping of the 3 part collar which surounded the blank as it was struck. I sold one like this once for over £300 and it's listed in my book Collectors Coins GB, linked to from above and also available on predecimal.com.

I had seen the reference in your book (I have the 2008 edition). Did you get a picture? I know the damage is small, but something like this? All of the lettering appears to be in the right place otherwise. Sorry about the picture quality, I've not got my camera with me so I had to abuse my webcam...

I wouildn't call that an edge knock because there is one on either edge and they are joined by a little flat on the rim.

No, nothing like that. That could be collar damage I suppose, I would think it would make it harder to sell not easier (which isn't really an issue for low value coins like this). I think there are pictures somewhere else in the Forum. All the writing was in the wrong oder, the Latin dates were superimposed etc.
