andy_jack Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I have a large 56mm diameter 1480 silver medal of John Kendall (Jo Kendal). 'Jo Kendal Rhodi Tvrcpellerivs' and a raised portrait on the obverse and a coat of arms and 'tempore obsidionis turcorum MCCCCLXXX'. Weighs around 68 grammes.Managed to find out quite a bit about Kendall and the Knights of St John, siege of Malta etc - but not the medal. Are any of you wise folks into historic medals?Any help would be appreciated. John Kendall Quote
Chris Perkins Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 The workmanship is quite crude Andy, in fact it looks to be cast from a soft metal alloy. I know the date in Roman numerals is 1480, but I would very much doubt that was the date it was made, as the style is very un-15th century. It may be rare, in that not many were made/are left, but I don't think the character is famous enough or the medal of good enough workmanship for it to be worth more than a few quid (i.e £10).Perhaps someone else will have a different opinion. TomGoodheart Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 (edited) I suspect it's a repro or recast of this John Kendall medalIt looks as if the originals were bronze. My guess is yours is a modern souvenir, perhaps from Rhodes or wherever he was born in England? Though if it were silver .... Edited March 16, 2008 by TomGoodheart Quote
