German 2 Deutsmark

i have a German 2 Deutsmark dated 1957...on the reverce it says: MAX PLANCK 1858 - 1947...is this a 'special' coin?

Max Planck was a leading German Scientist chap who died in 1947, and he has a Scientific institute of study named after him in Leipzig (I believe). The so called 'Max Planck Institut' (Institut is German for Institute before you start!).

I think he was a biologist, but I'm not really sure.

What I do know for sure is that the coins are very common and were struck over a number of years (right into the 70's). You'll probably find that unless yours is in Mint condition that it will be worth face value....2DM = 1 Euro = 66p

Oh no Planck wasn't a biologist - he was a physicist. Planck was born in Kiel on April 23th 1858, and educated at the universities of Munich and Berlin. In 1900 Planck postulated that energy is radiated in small, discrete units, which he called quanta. Developing his quantum theory further, he discovered a universal constant of nature, which is known as Planck's constant. His discoveries did not, however, supersede the theory that radiation from light or matter is emitted in waves. Physicists now believe that electromagnetic radiation combines the properties of both waves and particles. Planck's discoveries, which were later tested and confirmedby other scientists, were the basis of an entirely new field of physics, known as quantum mechanics, and provided a foundation for research in such fields as atomic energy.

Planck received the 1918 Nobel Prize in physics. In 1930, he was elected president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science, which was later renamed the Max Planck Society. He openly critiscised the Nazi regime and was forced out of the society, but became president again after World War II. He died at Gottingen on October 4th, 1947.

THE COIN IN QUESTION CAN BE WORTH ABOUT 30-50 euros,TAKE A LOOK E-BAY DE MUNZEN PAGE

DEPENDING WHAT MARKING IS ON THE COIN : THESE TYPE OF COINS ARE ON OFFER AND THEREFORE

But he's right you know, if the coin is in top grade and a rare year/mintletter it can be worth EUR30-50.

Like with a lot of coin ranges, there are rare years/types, but the vast majority are not worth very much at all.

The reason I'm always conservative and try not to get peoples hopes up is because usually people have a load of very common very worn coins! The chances that the original poster had a rarer one in EF or better condition are very small.

1957G is a scarcer one (the original post specified 1957), but only worth more than a pound or 2 if EF or better.

FIRST of I would like to state here that I am sorry if my answering the enquiry about the

2dm coin has upset some of the users of this forum , I live here in GERMANY and I use the

e-bay sites to look for coins that are for me intresting, at present on the site in germany from

e-bay de, these coins have been brought with prices rangeing from 30-50 euros , If someone

wishes to have something then they will buy it even if someone else things that it is

overpriced. MR PERKINS thank you for the kind words you wrote , I will try not to upset

the kettle pot , the next time I answer a question.

Chris I live in Dortmund a part of the german steel industry ,The coins that I collect are

mainly british with a small amount of german coins, as I mentioned before I,m no expert

Here in germany the price of coins from GB are acceptable and some times you can find a

good example at a good price. I have only just found this site on the web and the more

Oh you're British too! I'm right over in the East, near Chemnitz. There are no Brits probably for 50 miles in all directions! Although I do know an Australian.

I know what you mean about getting UK coins cheaper in Germany. What's your ebay id? if I see you bidding against me on ebay.de perhaps we can come to some arrangement and get the coin but share the profit or something.

No worries, I was not upset or anything, is just that my way of writing is a bit crude at times, as I am Spanish that lives in the UK... as you may know, Spanish speak a bit differently and that has to be noticed sometime...

I just saw someone that I don’t know contradict Chris, that I trust 200% in anything concerning coins, and found it funny.

As Chris said, you where right for the scarce dates, types, so I have to apologised, I hope you don’t take it into consideration when it comes to form an opinion of me.

Why don't you register? If you are going to be a regular member of the site, then it will be easier for us to get to know you and get a relationship going.

I am new myself and not an expert with coins, just starting seriously in the hobby...

when I return then I can apply my self more to this very good site ,as I said before

I am proberly known as a impulse buyer because if I like something and can

afford to purchase the item in question then I will. At present here in GERMANY

either on the e-bay or in certian coin shops are some very good coins to be had

as Chris knows okay I will close for now and when I return hope that my

application to join this club will be excepted.
