Hello,

Have been clearing out some drawers and cupboards, found the coins shown on the jpegs and wonder if anyone has any ides on what they may be.

There is also a much smaller version of 3, 12mms dia., dated 1887, which did not photograph well,

so hasn't been included.

Yorkshire Lass,the top coin is a 1/2 Sovereign,the bottom left-hand coin is a 1/3 Guinea (7 Shillings),& the bottom right-hand coin is a Sovereign.

Many thanks Aidan for such a quick reply! 1/3 guinea sounds a strange coin.

I have one or two others, which I think may be 'tokens', but your help would be very much appreciated. Will photo and post later today.

Yorkshire Lass,yes, 1/3 Guinea was a very strange denomination.Being from New Zealand,I have a very strong interest in both British Isles & British Commonwealth coins.As I am a fierce Royalist,I prefer to collect any British Commonwealth numismatic item (banknotes,coins,postal orders,& traders' tokens) that depicts any of our monarchs.I do collect stuff from British Commonwealth banana republics,however.

Whooa there Aidan!

The top coin and the '1/3 Guinea' are clearly forgeries, the colour is wrong and they are crude in comparison to the real thing! I have a couple of third Guinea forgeries in my forgery collection....And the half sov is simply awful. These are base metal coins coloured gold, and are almost worthless. The widow head coin appears to be a real sovereign.

Yorkshire Lass,the bottom 2 pieces are actually coin weights.The King Edward III coin is definitely a hammered coin.

I have got one of the British private pattern 5 ECU crowns that came out in 1992 in my collection.It was designed by Raphael Maklouf (who designed the Queen's portrait of the British 1985-97 coinage).

Although I don't favour the idea of Great Britain joining the Euro-Zone,I do collect Irish Euro coins.When both Malta & Cyprus start issuing Euros,I will be collecting them as well.

The bottom 2 are coin weights, made so that merchants could check gold coins to see if they were genuine (no digital scales in those days!). The king on one of them is James I. The hammered silver coin appears to be a groat, but I'm not all that up on hammered coins. The model crown is exactly what it says it is....A design proposed by someone that was never used. Sounds rare, but they were usually made in large numbers and I think some even saw circulation. It's probably got the makers name on it.

Chris,the model 'coins' are usually made by either Joseph Moore or by a firm somewhere in Germany,possibly Nuremburg.They were struck in large numbers.

You mean Lauer in Nuremburg, and those were all small toy coins as far as I know. The fake 'half sov' in the first post looks like it could be a Lauer. The Crown could well be a Joseph Moore.

Chris,yes,that was the crowd in Nuremburg I was meaning.There's actually a listing of the model coins in Krause's 'Unusual World Coins' catalogue.

I believe that the model crown IS a Joseph Moore.... It could be any Rogers # between 205 and 212... Can't tell from the image, but there are generally a few on Ebay at any given time..... Assuming that it is genuine, which it probably is.... not a rare item......
