Bolt Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Hello! I have a hammered coin which I have narrowed down to I think Henry vi, (through the mint mark) but I lack the detailed reference works to let me know what type it is. Am I correct, and can anyone let me know what it is exactly and its rarity? It is 18mm Quote
Geordie582 Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 I'd say Henry VI rosette-mascle issue of 1427-30 Mint of Callais. Spinks 1865. Value in my 2004 issue book is given as £30 in Fine. Your coin WAS VF but the missing parts will count severely against it. Quote

Ah well, at least I know I was in the right area. Quote
Geordie582 Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 There were so many "counterfeit" and Continental copies around at the time, people tended to cut a small piece out to test if the coin was, indeed, silver. Then, of course, there were the chancers that made a living of paring small ammounts off each coin that came their way, to sell the silver. Nice society, eh? Quote

I am surprised they risked it, as far as I know the penalties were pretty severe. Isn't that why they started making long cross pennies, to stop people shaving round the edges? Quote
