Guest tpg Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 Can anyone shed some light on the following piece? It is an 1854 fourpence that appears to be an overdate (it looks very much like 1854/34, although that doesn't make much sense). Could be a repunched date as well? Anyway, it is a beautiful piece and I have no qualms with calling it uncirculated, but I can find only a few references to any overdates and they only go up to Extra Fine. Any help is appreciated.Nicholas Quote

Any character can in theory be struck over any other character as it is not necessarily the use of an old die. It could be the result of a punching error and therefore it doesn't have to be the preceding number. There is no connection between overstruck digits and grade. so I'm not sure what you mean in the last sentence. Quote
