Hi everybody,

Have you noticed how the entire mintage of 1934 Crowns seems to be on ebay, originating in Taiwan, and all for sale on 'buy it now' for way under the true value. Interesting how the pictures seem to be of the same coin, and one which is genuinely for sale elsewhere on ebay! Interesting too that the sellers have little or no feedback. Far be it from me to suggest anything untoward in this - I leave you all to draw your own conclusions! Most other ebayers are, by not bidding!!! Seriously though, if it turns out that there are fake crowns being made for supply to the unwary, as opposed to a straightforward fraud, and some people find that they have bought fakes (as opposed to nothing at all), then there is a danger that these fakes will be offloaded in the future onto the UK coin market, once the buyers realise what has happened.

Given this, and if they exist, does anybody know what these far east crown coins look like, and how to tell the difference between them and the real thing?

I don't think the counterfeits you hypothesise about have been manufacatured. The listings from Taiwan rip the information and images from other legitimate sellers.

However, if they were to exist I imagine they would be fairly easy to spot compared to the real deal. I think they would probably be cast rather than struck, making the details less defined. Some Chinese counterfeits also make terrible slip-ups, such as the Silver Jubilee Crowns struck with the date 1877.

You will note that all have been removed from ebay!

I've had a number of wreath crown listings ripped off by far easteners. I try to report them when I can, and they do get removed (although you never get a thankyou from ebay of course).

These attempts by crooks to rip off buyers by stealing others' listings do happen from time to time and the crooks steal all sorts of coin listings and people are often tricked into parting with their money.

The sellers use 1-day listings because eBay are so pathetically useless at catching them in time.

Please look for my guide to help you buy coins more safely. A search for lapidary2 (me) will probably find the guide or failing that, look for the guide associated with sovereigns.
