Jon Hill Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 Hi,I found this coin yesterday with my metal detector. I think it is an Edward the Confessor Penny Spink 1176. Can you give me an Idea of how the damage will affect the value? I need to know to inform the landowner (I don't want to sell it)Thanks,Jon Quote
Geordie582 Posted April 16, 2006 Posted April 16, 2006 (edited) I agree with your identification, though there are minor differences. It could be either S1176 or 1177. You'll have to weigh it to be certain. (allow for the missing silver). I'd say about £100 but prices depend a lot on who wants it! The damage does affect it, only if it had been whole you could double the value (and more). Edited April 16, 2006 by Geordie582 Quote
Jon Hill Posted April 16, 2006 Author Posted April 16, 2006 Thanks,The coin weighs 1g so I suppose that makes it the 18 grain coin.Jon Quote
Jon Hill Posted April 22, 2006 Author Posted April 22, 2006 Hi,The coin has been identified as from the Bristol mint the reverse legend reads GODWINE ON BRIC. In my Spink book has a seperate price list for coins from individual mints. Does the mint affect the value of my coin?Regards,Jon Quote
Geordie582 Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Although the catalogues don't say so, it's possible the differing varieties are from different mints, and the moneyers travelled to each one. I doubt that the trade of Moneyer was all that prolific!Value, again, depends on the collector. Those in catalogues are only guides. As in all auctions, two people bidding can lose the plot and bid way above published price. So you are looking for two collectors who specialises in Bristol coinage if you want the best price. A good specialist auction house will get you the best price. All that said, I don't think your coin is that special to get excited about! As I said, I'd expect £100+ at auction. Don't forget, all this is subjective and other collectors will maybe disagree! Quote
