Rob Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 Hi I'm a guest on your site, and I've got a poser for you "educated coiners""which was the last pre-decimal coin to be withdrawn from circulation, finally ceasing to be legal tender in 1993"My guess would be the "florin" aka the 10pThanks.In case I can't find this page again my e-mail is beejay2@blueyonder.co.uk The double florin (4/-) issued between 1887 and 1890 has never been demonetised and therefore is still legal tender. Theoretically it could be spent today in a shop at face value of 20 pence, though having a value to collectors of many times this, you would be a fool to do so and you would probably get a strange look. Your question is therefore not valid. Quote
Guest Bryn Jarvis Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 Thanks Rob, for your PC reply. But generally speaking, there is a definitive answer to the question posed. Therefore is there anyone else with a more compassionate, informed answer, on this forum? Quote
Chris Perkins Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 It was the 10p, but only because the coin was made smaller and all larger 10p's/Florins were therefore demonetized.Rob is right about the double florin too. Quote
Guest Guest Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 Thanks Chris, I didn't doubt Rob for one second.Though I'll pass on educating our quizmaster on the 4/- bit.Incidently whilst I'm on this monetary forum, I used to have a "Threepenny bit" that had been made up from 2 coins, one being given a female thread, the other a male. Only perceptible by the slight mis-alignment of the sides. Probably in someones collection now. Quote
