Hi all,

I recently purchased a Proof gold 1oz Krugrand (south african minted from 1982) and to my dismay the coin displays a few light to medium surface scratches on both sides.

I wondered will this actively devalue the coin, as its 'gold value' is normally £230, i paid £290 for the proof version.

Well I would imagine it most certainly does, you do of course have the gold value as a minimum, but personally I'd return it or exchange for another if you are not happy with it and are able to.

A jewellers' eyeglass is always a good tool to carry when purchasing coins.

OK, not an advert but more of a tip...

If you can't find jeweller's eyeglasses (often called jeweller's loupes) anywhere and you want to try before you buy, try specialist camera shops. Photographers use them to examine prints and negatives. My local shop in Southampton has quite a range!
