Citizen H Posted January 23 Posted January 23 hello all, there's 3 of probably the best of my coins, So following on from recent conversations these are Shillings........ I will do one at a time so hopefully not bombard the forum... they have come with notes but I only now got to look into things, this is mentioned as, James I, Silver Shilling, I.M Trefoil (key over crown... could this be the Mint Mark?) I did try but couldn't find and further information so any web site worth visiting All and any input, value guide greatly appreciated, many thanks "H" Quote
Coinery Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Mintmark is the key, as you say, making it 2nd coinage and dating it 1609-10 It looks like the 5th bust to me so S2656 In that grade I’d say £40-£50 Quote

I don’t know of any web resource, you might have to start buying a book or two. Here’s the mint marks for James I taken from the SCBC, which would be a good start! You can buy this for around £30 + postage from a dealer on here if you want one? https://rpcoins.co.uk/collections/catalogues-s-z/products/coin-of-england-2025-pre-decimal Edited January 23 by Coinery 1 Quote

I thought it was the Key was above the kings crown??? this page of mint marks is a real eye opener, I certainly be looking into this further, again Stuart, many thanks "H" Quote
Coinery Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) This is an example of crown and key over crown on gold! Edited January 23 by Coinery Quote
Citizen H Posted January 23 Author Posted January 23 (edited) interesting.... I was able to enlarge the photo, definitely shows a key with no crown... so the previous owner was incorrect.....but at least this one wasn't a copy.... all the best "H" Edited January 23 by Citizen H 1 Quote

You have to appreciate it’s really hard to price ANY coin. Even in big auction houses, coins can go for double or half their values. I think the best way to value coins in these grades is to carry out a search on eBay - not to see what crazy prices people are asking, but to click on ‘completed items’ in the filter and see what people have actually been prepared to pay for certain types and grades. It’s an eye-opener! 2 Quote
Citizen H Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 This is the third one James I, Shilling Mint mark, Lis Or Trefoil ? 1604 - 05 ? Any help will be greatly appreciated Quote
Coinery Posted January 25 Posted January 25 You have the correct date, making it 2nd coinage, 3rd bust, mm Lis - S2654 Here’s a couple examples of what I was mentioning earlier re completed item on eBay 1 Quote
Citizen H Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 This is really interesting... I'm beginning to realise that a lot of mine have been rubbed to the point of why they may have been boot fair available in the 90's... I did buy some gold coins from a dealer so they hopefully will be a better place of buy back then........ I do also have What still may be Maundy money to show... All the very best "H" 1 Quote
Citizen H Posted January 26 Author Posted January 26 Ive just noticed that one letter looks double stamp? could this be correct? Quote

Its possible that they are Mint marked..? I was only able to find this on the net so not sure what to look out for on mine.... "Guineas were also struck in 1745 with the LIMA mark under the king’s head. The mark relates to the area where the gold was originally mined in Peru, and there have been several theories..." Quote
