SilverAge3 Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 I've grown increasingly more interested in coins of the Colonial era of the New World, as well as extensions of that. Coins minted in the US from the Colonial period, (and EAC, Early American Copper), and really in general, for anything historical, are just too absurdly priced, but plenty of other coins were minted, notably by Spain, and its colonies. So far I only have bought a single 8 Realest from Mexico, a much later Caps and Rays type. I've got one book in hand I've been reading, The Practical Book if Cobs, by Sedwick and Sedwick, and in the mail is a copy of Pillars and Portraits. Has anyone here gone down this research path or collected New World silver or gold, whether cobs or milled? (I won't be pursuing any gold Escudos, but would be curious to see pieces anyone might share). Quote
scott Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Have a few, hard to find books on the Spanish coins themselves outside of Spain. 1 Quote
Bardolph Posted October 21, 2024 Posted October 21, 2024 Glen Murray, who as far as I know is a US gentlemen who lives and has lived for a long time in Spain, has written some very specialised handbooks, such as Las Acuñaciones de Moneda en Segovia (30BC to 1869), published in 2009; Casa de Moneda de Madrid (1614 - 188), published 2014; and finally Cecas de Potosi y Lima (published 2016). These works are fantastic- they have so much detail ( mintage by face value and year), gold or silver content of coins, background information, names etc of assayers and mint masters, superb life size photos of coins, high quality paper, etc - and they are all surprisingly cheap - the Potosi - Lima book, 290 odd pages of fantastic information cost me only 18 euros, and I seem to recall that the Segovia handbook was 15€! All are published under the imprint of the Asociacion Amigos de la Casa de la Moneda de Segovia: www.SegoviaMint.org and info@segoviamint.org - and they are essential for any collector of Spanish coins. 4 Quote
