Guest cb Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 Hi I work for the British Red Cross, and have been given ahge bag of coin, sorting through I found a 1883 penny, stamped on the reverse is A M T F and 17/9/93 is this worth anything? Quote
Peter Posted May 25, 2005 Posted May 25, 2005 It is not a rare date. The fact its been stamped will also reduce the value further. Quote
mint_mark Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 The fact its been stamped will also reduce the value further. But this isn't necessarily so is it?On the one hand, a stamp or countermark does disfigure the coin and obliterate part of the design, so many people view it as "damage".But on the other hand it might indicate an unusual use for the coin, perhaps allowing it to circulate somewhere else or for another value. The problem is that there are so many stamps and countermarks, ranging from advertisements, peoples' initials and idle carvings to official countermarks and re-denominations. Some are very collectable and others are only interesting to those who know what they mean. This one seems interesting because it has a date... but I have no idea what it means Quote
Peter Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 I wouldn't raise any hopes all the same....Take a risk and buy it off him for a £5 ....I think you are clutching at straws. Quote
