Guest shelly Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 hello i,m not a coin collector, but my dad has a 1937 12 sided coin think its brass, he also has 1861 1 cent with queen victoria on it,which i think is odd as it says nova scotia on it.could you tell me if they might be worth selling? thankyou Quote
Chris Perkins Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Hello Shelly,The first coin is a threepence, which will not be of any value unless in perfect, or very near perfect condition. The second coin is from Nova Scotia, which is a Canadian province. Literally Latin for 'New Scotland'. Those are pretty common too, so not of much worth unless well above average. Quote
Master Jmd Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 Literally Latin for 'New Scotland'. Never new that Quote
Chris Perkins Posted April 1, 2005 Posted April 1, 2005 No doubt Geoff will come along and call me wrong now! The Romans knew Scotland as Caledonia, so Scotia is probably a modern invention. Quote
mint_mark Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 And in the Pacific Ocean there are New Caledonia and New Hebrides... those Scots would settle anywhere... anywhere but Scotland that is :) Quote

No Chris, you're right! The Scottish monarchs were always known as Rex or Regina Scotorum - King or Queen of Scots,The Canadian Federation wasn't established until 1867 and even then Nova Scotia wasn't absorbed into the Federation until the mid 20th-century, being regarded until then as a separate dominion it's own right.Canada is full of people with Scottish ancestry. I have a friend coming over from Toronto later this month, and he's half Scottish as his mother emigrated from Scotland in the 60s.Geoff Quote

Doh - I'm talking out of my backside here. It was Newfoundland which was a latecomer to the Federation. Quote
