Master Jmd Posted February 19, 2005 Posted February 19, 2005 I have posted this on Colin Cooke's discussion forum, (Here), and was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on this type; the 7 of the date seems to be struck over another number(?), and I have not found any examples of this type. Thanks, Jmd. Emperor Oli Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Looks more like a filled die to me. Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Agreed, it certainly doesn't resemble a clear overdate or even a messy one! Quote
Master Jmd Posted February 20, 2005 Author Posted February 20, 2005 Maybe, but not all overstrikes are clear. It looks like a 3 or a 5, but I think that I would also agree with you that it is just a filled die. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 Well we can eliminate a 3 or a 5 because the alignment for George IV farthings was changed in 1826. Some crap probably just got caught up in the die. Quote
mint_mark Posted February 22, 2005 Posted February 22, 2005 If it was crud in the die we'd have parts of the digit missing... but we have a huge blob that extends beyond the normal area of the seven, which suggests to me that part of the die must be missing... that is, it is damaged. Also, the top of the seven looks strange... as though one part has been overlaid on the other. Maybe someone tried to assemble a seven from more basic shapes...I think we need to see a normal one... maybe I'll take a picture and try and post it. Quote
