Voynov_BG Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Hello again, friends I know that such repaired letters are common for 1860-1861 penny coins, but I still decided to share this photo with you if someone could say what the reason was. All letters in the word PENNY, except of E, look reengraved over small letters. The reason I took pictures of this coin is that I bought it from the same place (same seller and same lot) from ebay, along with the other penny pictured in another topic 1862 2 over 1 overdate. But I believe this penny is not so rare Quote
jelida Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 This looks like a fairly normal die repair where the letters of a worn die were re-punched. The repositioning of the letter punch was often rather erratic, giving the appearance you show. Jerry Quote
